Subtitle: What do you do when your oven and plata are off, you haven't made anything and an unexpected guest shows up?
(aka a lesson in crisis management)

I must confess I haven't prepared anything at all (which is rather unusual for me), as we were invited out Fri dinner and there was an event at our synagogue followed by lunch. So I didn't ask DH to set the oven or plata (I got delayed coming home from work, literally walked in 15min before candlelighting.) Not to mention we found our shabbat urn stopped functioning.

At kiddush, I found out it was only our children who were invited for the lunch. On top of it, DH saw a friend with no lunch plan and invited him. Well, thank goodness we did have store-bought challot. I managed to whip up "a lunch" consisting of hummous, boiled eggs (leftover from Fri lunch), cherry tomato, green salad, pickles, olives, sweetcorn salad (from tinned sweetcorn), cold cuts, smoked salmon, finished off with fruit salad, store bought biscuits and very nice chocolate. B-H we managed ok.

1/4 cup cooked or canned peas ( I use frozen )
1 onion chopped
4 stalks celery
3 Tbsp. mayonnaise
salt

Drain peas. Combine with remaining ingredients and season to taste.

Is the amount of peas correct? 1/4 cup peas for every 1 onion? TIA, I'd love to try this! Smile

We have guests with 7 kids (6 are teen agers) for lunch this week. Mostly big kids and boys.

my challa with:
Chummus (bought), tehina, roasted peppers in marinade, roasted peppers in spicy sauce, zucchini pate, lemony grated carrot salad, beet salad, pickles, olives, coleslaw, maybe egg salad, turkish salad (bought), tabboule
If anyone is still hungry:
Huge cholent, grilled chicken, Armenian rice pilaf, potato kugel, tomato salad, marinated dinner salad
Then, for dessert:
Tea and choice of 2 cakes.

I spend a lot of time and effort on the salads so that I don't have to kill myself with the main-meal dishes. Vegetables are cheap and healthy and people go gaga over the salads and dips. Also looks great on the table!
