I'm terrible at matching and am looking for advice from savvier people here. We have an upcoming simcha. My 4 yr old has a great hand-me-down I think she can wear. It's sleeveless so I'm trying to figure out what color shirt to put under it. The top (bodice?) is whitre and the skirt is brown and white checks, with a brown sash at the middle. Can I get away with putting a white shirt under it? She does have a brown shirt, but it's no so fancy, plus it has pink trim.

uh-uh. I don't think the brown with the pink trim would go. I think u could go with either a solid white or brown shell.

Go for solid white. Bring the dress along when you shop so you can try to get a shirt as close to the same white as possible.
It's not that brown and pink wouldn't "match"--think of Neapolitan ice cream--it's that, because the dress has no pink, it would be painfully obvious that the outfit had been cobbled together from what you had in the closet.

If the top is white- then definitely go with a white shell underneath. Enjoy!

agreed ... nice choice 
anything underneath will simply look like a mismatch ... and the white top of dress wouldn't go with the white shirt ... hard to tell w/o seeing ... unless you incorporate a pink flower within the sash and then s/t similar for her hair ... but it would have to be the exact pink ...
