Any ideas?
This is my first year of teaching kindergarten and I need a discipline system that's age appropriate. I'm thinking something along the lines of a dollar store or cumulative chart but does anybody have any tried and tested ideas?
Forgot to add-it's a mixed (boys and girls) class of 12 kids. They are all frum (chabad) and quite rambunctious.
TIA

I teach upper grades, but I have a daughter in kindergarten this year. In her class there is no discipline system. At this age, I don't think they need one yet. I think if you set the expectation that everyone always listens to morah, they will. I don't think kids should be rewarded with a "prize" for that. Maybe for giving up a toy or soemthing :extra" special, but not for doing whats expexted ofthem. Once there's a discipline system kids can decide it "its worth it" for them.
Instead I would encourage as much as possible. Like, "I love the way Rivky is sitting quietly ready for Morah"s instucrtions" thats enough. Rivky will feel like gold and always make sure to be attentive when morah syas so... you know what I mean?

As a parent of past kindergartners (also called pre 1a?) I have seen two approaches that seem to work.

Sometimes a class needs the extra push (she does mention that they are rambunctious) and motivation.

Individual - You can set up a chart where children accumulate points individually for whatever areas you think could use it and then have prize choices available

Divided by groups - the children are grouped and earn points as a group (I have always found this to be slightly unfair, there is always the one group that can never be ready first etc.. and then all the members lose out)

The whole class - there is no competitiveness between individuals (and can be done at the same time as individual) The class accumulates points or fills a marble jar and each time there is a different reward they are working toward where they get rewarded as a class (popcorn party, extra recess, melave malke ... )

Good Luck

Not a teacher, but two kindergarten age kids recently

When the children did something really naughty - like kick or bite another kid - that child has to sit on a chair on the side of the room and watch the sand timer (either 3 or 5 minutes I think).

My DS once bit another kid during outdoor playtime and he had to sit inside for the 5 minutes wathching the sand timer. He never bit again!!!
