Do kids usually become naturally aware of their bodily functions at some point? Is it always obvious when they have reached that stage? Is it necessary to initiate a dialog about it or try to teach them about it before they show any signs of awareness? My son is almost 2, and he looks surprised when he sees himself pee when he stands in the bath. He never asks to be changed, and often tries to avoid being changed, because he is busy and doesn't want to be taken away from what he's doing. I'm just wondering how I will know when he's starting to get near ready for toilet training and whether I should assist the process in any way.

at some point, I bought a potty/stool for the bathroom, and would use that as reference for interest/basic understanding of this concept.

ie. ds was able to figure out what was done in it ~2.5 years, but no control, etc. so I knew he "got" the idea, but just wasn't ready for the whole thing yet.

right now, dd gets that it is to be sat upon, but does NOT get what she's supposed to do on it. (she's just over 2), even though she does asked to be changed and can tell me if she's wet or otherwise. So, again, she's clearly not ready IMHO bc she doesn't get what she's supposed to do with it.
