I'm sorry this forum is not related but inquiries has amother disabled and this post reveals certain info about myself.
My husband is american and so therefore my kids are too
the latest rules are you need a passport or other such ID in order to get a SS number if you live outside the US.
My question is can we use expired passports or do I need to get my kids all new passports now even though they don't yet need it?

Most likely. Call the embassy. They will help you.

Yes, all ID needs to be current, unexpired in order to get a ss#.

If your husband is an American, did he/you register the children at birth at the US Embassy?
I presume the answer is no as registering Consular Reprot of Birth Abroad automatically would register the child for SS#s.
You'll need a form, a birth certficate and a valid passport for ID. Not sure the form number, but you can probably download via embassy's website, check under consulate service and/or American citizens services. Or check Social Security Online website (www.socialsecurity.gov). Your husband also needs to bring his passport to show his citizenship (I presume he knows his SS#s). If the child is over 12years old, he/she needs to apply in person and fill in additional forms.
Also you'll need to check the embassy/consulate's website. You just can't go there and drop off the document. In some places you need to make an appointment, usually over an internet.
posting as amother also to avoid identifying myself.

Ah, not true at all. ROBA, passport and SS# are all separate forms and until a few months ago, you needed the ROBA (and passport) in hand before ordering a SS# so that meant yet another trip to the consulate. My son is almost 19 months old and as of when we got his ROBA and passport you couldn't do the SS# at the same time. It has since changed so when we go to get the new baby it's ROBA, passport and SS#, we'll also get a SS# for our toddler.

we spent a half a day at the embassy and applied for everything at once. They already all had US birth certificates and an expired passport except for one child
