my husband and I married later in life, and most of the grandparent/great grandparent/other relative names have been given to his nieces and nephews. We're thinking we'll probably just use those names anyway and our kid might have the same or similar name as his or her cousin - not such a big deal. But wondering what you all think and whether you'd deliberately give your child the same or a very similar name to that child's cousin.

FYI we used a name from my side for our last child but are wondering for the next.

Very common in my circles. Friend of mine has many grandchildren, three of them named Adi.

Im the youngest from a large family.
DH mentioned he didnt want to name the same as my neices, by the first kid we had a name planned that no one had used but after birth we didnt feel it fit and randomly came up with a name completely forgetting I have a neice with that name.
2nd kid no one has his first name, 2nd name is the same 2nd name as both of our siblings
3rd was born 10 months after a grandmother was nifter so called her after, another neice was born 3 months before so they share the same name. they are 3 now and call eachother 'the other ...' its really cute. and I have on my side a neice with the same name who is approx 14 yrs older than dd and her parents choose the name because they like it...
there are names for my next kid that I used to really like but I dont like them anymore as they have been used a few times in DH family within a short time frame. We live close to DH family so meet up alot so it disturbs me more.
we dont live close to my family and we all have kids at different ages so I dont find it as annoying having the same name.

In my family there are LOTS of repeats and we have to say "MY Son x" or "Brother Y" or "Uncle Z"\

Me and 2 siblings have children named for my father.
Some have names from opposite sides of the family.
Some have 2 grandchildren with the same name.

There are 3 of my DD, and they are all a year apart, and they all live in Lakewood....I can just see the shidduch info getting mixed up between them. I was the last to give the name, but never would have considered any other, as she's named after my MIL AH.

I think that's why certain names are common in families. If your kids are younger, OP, at least people won't mix them up.

I'm not a fan if the cousins have the same surname and are close in age unless they have different middle names that are actually used. I don't love it when there are five Moshe Goldblatts ages 4-6 running around unless they're called Moshe Dovid, Moshe Zelig, Moshe Meir, Moshe Kapoyer and Moshe Pipick.

It's very common in our family. We are proud of the names and the legacy behind them some people get called by their last name to when families are together so there is no confusion. There are a few groups of cousins the same age with the same name. Others that are know by "big and little " if the two cousins are very far apart in age. There's also aunt/ niece and uncle /nephew 's with same name

We do it all the time.
If we lived in the same town & had the same surname & kids are exactly the same age- maybe then we would wait for a later child to give the name so there's less confusion.

Most people have repeating names in the family. It’s not an issue in the ashkenazi world.

In the heimishe world is it beyond common. We name after deceased grandparents so it’s normal for a few cousins to be named Chaim or Leah

I have a few grandchildren knh with the same name. It’s a family name my kids are proud to name after. It’s not a problem we refer to them as X last name if we need to differentiate. It’s fun for the cousins they feel like they are in a special club Smile

We wouldn't add a name when naming after a parent. Like it or not.
