We are dipping peanut butter balls into choc. The recipe says to mix with shortening and it's so fattening already; can we mix with it with water

I think water will make the chocolate hard.

Mixing chocolate with water is a big no-no. It causes the chocolate to "sieze"- (turn grainy). You can put a bit of oil in it. It usually calls for some shortening or oil so the chocolate won't crack when it hardens.

For peanut butter balls, I sometimes add some peanut butter to the chocolate, it makes it a it creamier (and yummier)! The whole thing is fattening, it's peanut butter, margarine and sugar with chocolate at this point the shortening doesn't make any difference!
