In NJ

For first time employees

They inject you with something and see if you react. It's to test for exposure to tuberculosis. Is this a vaccine or something? Is there any way to get out of it?

I had to do this for nursing school before working in the hospital

It’s not a vaccine, it’s a screening test.
If you were exposed at some point to TB and it is latent in your blood stream then you will have a skin reaction to the material that they inject in your arm. If you don’t have it latent, then there will be no reaction and you are good.

If you test positive (have a skin reaction) then there are more tests to do to confirm that you were indeed exposed, and most doctors recommend taking preventative antibiotics to make sure that it doesn’t Chas vshalom turn active.

It's just a screening. It's not a big deal. Your Dr can do it.

It was very regular in many places even outside of NJ/NY years ago. I grew up in OH and would get TB tests yearly when I was a young child in the 80s. Not a big deal.

It would be very important to know if one had TB to treat it and minimize spread and in NJ, it’s still a concern.

You can do a blood test instead of the skin test if your prefer, so nothing is injected into your body

It's not a big deal and very common for it to be required

I think they stopped doing what I called the "beubble TB test" Now they screen via blood test. I have to do this yearly, while working in pre-school. NY area.

Try to get the blood test instead. I find blood tests hurt less, don't leave you with this weird circle on your inner forearm and you don't have to go back to the doctor 2 or 3 days later to verify that you don't have a reaction.

Dh just had the quantiferon test and it came back as indeterminate. His dr told him to go for a chest X-ray instead of the skin test because it’s more accurate. Can someone explain this to me?

Skin test is a screening, screenings are usually somewhat less accurate than diagnostic tests like xrays
If someone tests positive on the skin test they are sent for a chest xray
