I go through this every year. I live in a huge manhattan building and just this week we got the list of workers in our building so we k ow who to tip. There are seven of them!! Even if I don't tip top dollar (I can't) this is a lot of money for me!

Some of them are people who have been very helpful. Some of them are jerks. Some of them may be perfectly fine, but I have never had any reason to interact with them.

One year I made mistake of only giving decent tips to ones who have been helpful. One of the jerky ones (the boss) proceeded to make me lowest priority for months!

How do you handle tipping?

In NYC if it's standard to tip everyone and you don't then you risk those ppl you don't tip being rude to you. I would consider it a regular yearly expense. If you go through this every year it shouldn't really come as a surprise to you.

Does your building have a pooling tip option where the management divides your tip amongst the employees?

Sorry. I probably wasn't clear. I wasn't planning to not tip. I was hoping for some advice on how. Who to tip the most, etc. And maybe some dollar amounts.

What a fantastic idea. It's too late for this year but I am going to suggest it for next year.

I live a huge building too. my list has more than 20 staff members! when I was new to the neighborhood (20’ years ago) I griped about having to tip and how much it cost. now I give with a whole heart . it’s not only a thank you for the year past, it’s almost a down payment for the year to come. that way when my toilet floods on a shabbos (saturday) I know they will respond with the urgency it needs. or when my packages sometimes get delivered to my door and I don’t have to shlep them. suburbanites have property taxes and we have tips lol. Just kidding since tips are a lot less, but year after year I’ve found it’s money well spent

I live in a full service building

There are helpful lists on the internet which provide the minimum amount to tip for each position.

It is well known that you need to tip at least the minimum - if not more - or you will probably suffer the repercussions the next year. LOL

For me there are some staff that I tip extremely well and others that I don't. But I tip more than the minimum to everyone unless it is a new hire and then I give a bit less.

I put the checks in an envelope to distribute and so no one knows the amount I am giving to anyone else

I also tip when they do anything special for me during the year. Some of the guys have been with the building for years and are extremely helpful and kind. One of the doormen noticed I had a cough some years ago and send me a package of special tea and he continues to give me a box every year
