I got jewelry worth probably 15 to 20 thousand from my in laws when I got married. They were very generous.
I don’t have insurance and I’m realizing that kinda nuts. I’m curious how common it is to insure jewelry. Also, anyone know how or where I can get it insured in Lakewood?
Thanks!

Of course!! That's the first I did after we got married.
I think it might even be included in our rental insurance as well.

Oops I messed up when creating the poll. The option to say no didn’t come through. You can like this post to vote that none of your jewelry is insured.
added the option. Love mod

Oh interesting point, I need to look at my rental insurance and see if that’s the case for me. Thanks for the idea!

I lost a piece of jewelry worth about $2000. it was itemized in my insurance, but it wasn’t worth the increase in premium to claim it. after that, I decided to stop itemizing. I was paying to insure things that I couldn’t actually claim. ask your insurance agent if it is worth it. If you have a single piece that is worth a significant amount, then it might be worth it. But I don’t think you can insure a pile of jewelry worth 20k as an item.

How does homeowner/rental insurance coverage help if someone loses/is robbed of an insured item outside the home?

You usually have to pay extra for this type of coverage, and it might depend on the item
Most insurance (renters or homeowners) policies have limits to fine jewelry, if it’s covered at all, unless you pay extra for additional riders
Personally I found it cheaper to use a different insurance carrier for my jewelry, instead of adding it to my homeowners. All of my jewelry is covered on one policy and includes loss, theft, damage-anywhere
