Use short grain brown rice. It looks the most like barley after it cooks.
We put ours up on Thursday night:
1 sliced yellow onion
2 whole cloves garlic
1 pc fatty flanken or cheek meat
3 potatoes, cubed
2 cups short grain brown rice
1 marrow bone (optional)
Large squirt BBQ sauce (abt 1/2 cup)
Medium squirt ketchup ( abt 1/3 cup)
Tons of smoked paprika (generously sprinkle over whole cholent)
Salt
Pepper
Dump in crockpot, meat should be in between the other ingredients (not on bottom of Crock-Pot and not on top as it will dry out).
Do not need to mix.
Cover generously with water, should completely cover the cholent and have at least a little more than that
Cook on low overnight Thursday
Fri morning check water level as rice absorbs a lot to make sure it's not above water line
Fri afternoon enjoy a toameha
Turn on keep warm or even lower setting before lighting candles
Enjoy!!
