If you are a Shiffy or Lani or Chevy or Shevy (meaning, you go by a hebrew nickname that doesn't have an official Hebrew spelling), how did you spell your name at school? Did you write out your full name? Or did you do שפי, לני, כבי, שבי?

שפי is fine, people would guess Sheffy, but there is no short "I" sound in Hebrew so that's the best you can get

לני is fine, people would guess Lenny, which is growing in popularity among the secular for some reason.

כבי doesn't make sense because it would always be pronounced Kevy -- if a word starys with כ it is always K and not Kh/Ch

שבי is very unfortunate as it means "captivity", you would need to choose a new nickname IMO or go by the full name.

Thanks! I was thinking about כבי, was gonna do with a ches, the Chevy is a nickname for yocheved and that's spelled with a chof. Thanks for all your input Smile

Girls in my class with those nicknames just wrote their full name on tests and roll call but explained to people their nickname. Wasn't a big deal at all.

Still dealing with this today as my husband's name is Dovy which in Hebrew is Dubi. He just writes Dov and then explains to people it's Dovy.

This bothers me so much when kids spell their Hebrew nickname. It never looks right and is much harder to read. The way I was taught is to write out your full Hebrew name and then when people speak to you, they call you the nickname.

What Naomi2 said. Hebrew names tend to be relatively short (about the only benefit I can see to writing without vowels) so there's really no reason not to write them out. It not as if your kid's name is Elizabeth Artemisia.

I wrote chani with a yad at the end. I didn’t want to be called chana.

I totally hear that. But being on the other side- I hated during roll call when they called my whole name cuz NOBODY ever used it and I would've preferred to be called by my nickname. So I guess we'll see what happens when my daughter gets to school. Ultimately up to her I was just wondering!

Chani is one of those names that actually works written chet nun yud. People will read it and say chani. Other names like Chevy and Shevi as mentioned already- won’t look right or be pronounced correctly.

My daughter is called Yali and I was really nervous about this issue because ילי does not look like a name. She ended up introducing herself to her nursery morah with both of her full names (on her own accord) so that's what she goes by in school.

That’s yaeli. I’d assume Yali is יאלי.

I guess it depends which community. I've never seen either. שפי or שיפי would be fine, but IMO many Israelis will visibly recoil if they hear Shevy. It would be like if it were 2002 in the US and your kid was nicknamed "Hijack"

I've seen Chevy written as כבי in Israel since it's short for Yocheved. It does look funny, but with a ches looks even worse.

Israeli here and I know several Shevys. Not uncommon and nobody recoils from it.

Same, I live in Israel and know Israeli Shevys (not American Israeli). No one blinks. And שיפי would be with a yud.
