All the Jewish recipe websites call for idaho or 'yellow' variety. So what's the equivalent in the UK from say Tesco /Asda /Sainsburys?

The best kugel potatoes are called Alberto potatoes. From lidl or sainsburys.

I second Vivaldi potatoes from Sainsbury's. I heard so much about them from friends and colleagues. I tried them and my family loves it!

Vivaldi are great for kugel. Asda's used to be called Marabel, and are now called 'Belle'. They have their times in the year when they are not amazing, but most of the time they are so brilliant! Theyre good for everything, but kugel with these potatoes definitely tops the charts!

The new Belle potatoes are nothing like the Asda Extra Special Marabel. If you read the reviews on Asda there are plenty customers begging Asda to bring back in again the Special Mararbel potatoes and with heavy complaining against the Belle potatoes.

I find that potatoes that are more yellow are better for kugel, they have different names in different shapes but if they’re yellow they’re the best.
