if you are using a loaf, either throw it into a pot with water, salt, pepper and a carrot and let it cook for 1.5 hours. Or let it defrost, unwrap it it, shape into balls and cook in the water.

sugar
onion
salt
black pepper
water
1-2 carrots
fish (of course)

Cook for 1 1/2 hours. Take off the wrapper after an hour of cooking.

This is my mother's recipe:
1 roll gefilte fish
2 small onions
carrots
1 tsp paprika
dash of pepper
1/2 T salt
2 C sugar
8 C water
Slice onions into circles. Layer on bottom of pot. Add sugar, spices and water. Add fish and carrots. Cook on high flame for 5 minutes covered until bubbles. Lower to med-high flame letting air escape and cook for 1.5 hours. Cool, strain onions from sauce. Refrigerate.
