Not all Ashlenazim hold by the Mishnah Berurah. The Shulchan Aruch has commentary from the Rema that explains any time the halacha differs for Ashkenazim.

Different strokes and they're all appropriate. We also eat for oneg yom tov though we avoid some of the biggies for RH, or at least for that to be the dominant taste.
I wonder if the chrain was sweetened.
