A friend broke the plate at a recent simcha, not in a bag, and promptly Hatzolo had to be called because of the bleeding she sustained.
Is there an inyan not to use a bag? It's the first such simcha on either side; could they not have know the "danger" ?

oy vey! I think it depends on the thickness of the plate. In our case, the plate that was brought was too thick and we had a lot of trouble getting it to break at all. It took 4 tries to get it to split into 2.

Somthing like this should be known. she had to go to the hospital for stitches. when she should have been enjoying the simcha.

it happened to my friends mother at the chassuna, she was rushed to the hospital to get stiches...missed the entire kabolos panim basically

We also do the Tenoyim right before the Kabbolas Ponim. However, at the vort, where a "kabbolas kinyan" is done, a plate is broken as well.

a bit off-topic, but at my wedding, dh's Rosh Yeshiva was mesader kidushin and he insisted that the plate by tenoyim was wrapped in a tablecloth. it was very thick and the mothers tried, but they had to unwrap it a coulpe of times to make sure that it was still safe but could also be broken. he is known to be very careful in matters like that - to try to make sure that a simcha remains a FULL simcha!

ours was at our engagement party (not sure about tenyaim/vort, you don't hear these words commonly here), and wrapped in aluminium paper.
