I really wanted to put this in the politics section and make it more serious, like what laws do you think should go and be added, but since I can’t be part of it, I decided to do this instead. It’s under interesting discussions, but it’s light and shouldn’t be too serious.

What laws would you enact if you were in power?

Here, in Argentina, every morning people wash their sidewalks with a ton of water and soap. That of course is not a law, but I would make a law to take it away unless there’s poop that needs to be washed away. The issue is not the washing, it’s the sidewalks themselves. Most of them are like tiles and they break pretty often or just gets loose. You can step on one, not realizing that there’s a puddle of water underneath it and splash, you get all wet with soapy, wet water. Yuck!! Maybe they have to take better care of their sidewalks should be the law. Wink

If you talk loudly on your cellphone in public, a policeman may confiscate it on the spot.

When schools are closed for any reason free or minimal cost (income based sliding scale) childcare must be available for all school aged children up to 10 years of age. Stimulating extra curricular activities should be available for children aged 10 to 15. Parents who opt out of this plan should be reimbursed for providing their own childcare services.

Insurance companies would be required to cover needed services without balking or making clients and doctors’ offices jump through a million hoops.

School districts would be required to correctly identify students based on their actual disabilities and not the one that best matches the district’s financial interests.

Organic/ healthy produce should be cheaper than junk food!

The government should subsidize exercise activities up to $300 a month. Can be used for a gym membership, equipment, fees to take lessons in a sport, etc.

Working poor and middle-class should have access to the same health services/ benefits as people who qualify for government-covered health insurance, and be able to choose their providers.

Deductibles should be vanishing or at least significantly lower, with lower OOP costs.

Dental and vision insurance should not be separate from health insurance.

People in the “squeeze” income bracket (working poor, lower middle class, people with high medical costs) should be automatically put into a lower tax bracket and taxes should be calculated according to the net income, not gross.

It should be illegal to ask stupid shidduch questions (when was the person toilet-trained; at age 5, what did s/he want to be when s/he grew up; chest size; send a full body picture; if s/he were a fruit, what kind would s/he be, etc.

This one’s for Extra Credit - ice cream should be free and healthy!

I wouldn't add laws, I would take away laws. Too much government interference in our lives as it is.

Examples:

NY -take away the ban on plastic bags

Get rid of a lot of the mandatory laws that came into play with Obamacare (example: you must do a Chlamydia test on all teens of a certain age- whether they are sxually active or not)

I second these!

And add this (some states have this option)
Parents should get compensated for taking care of a critically Ill child. Homecare nursing stinks (another issue that majorly needs to be addressed) and parents end up shouldering a crazy amount of care & responsibility often needing to give up their own job & income. Pay us for what we’re doing anyway instead of having a stranger snore on my chair, decide every other day to not show up & be negligent & irresponsible.

Private school tuition should be tax deductible. Before AGI.

Getting off benefits should be incentified. It should not be worth more to work less and receive benefits than to work more and lose benefits.

I think mothers should be paid the price of daycare or head start to stay home with kids up to age 6. If they want to use it for daycare they can but a lot of women want to stay home but can't.

I think healthcare should be covered by a 4% income tax on EVERYONE. Even if you make a million a year you pay 4% for the common good.

I think the benefits cliff should be a benefits Slope

I think EU food safety standards should be adopted

Corn and soy subsidies should end and the subsidies should be moved to dairy, eggs, fruits and vegetables like in Israel

Sugary foods should be taxed like tobacco.

Paternity leave should be 3 months and both parents should get double sick days for 5 years

I would ban daylight savings time and the whole moving of the clock situation.

We live in a world with electricity. There's no need to artificially manipulate the time anymore.

I don't need an extra hour in middle of the night only to lose that hour 4 months later in middle of the night. I hate how moving the clock messes up everyone's internal clock. I don't like that it the zman (for Shabbos, for mikvah) is so late in the summer. I hated these past few weeks that I woke up and it was still dark outside. Let the time be the time v'zehu.

So if a parent gives a kid a potch for running in the street they should go to jail?

Even if you are very against corporal punishment, do you really think that the children
would be better off in foster care???

Moms need to get every Tuesday off from doing anything important. From bus duty to dinner to laundry to childcare to work (if applicable). Comes along with certificate to a day at the spa and ice cream store!
