Okay so this might be a stupid question but if anyone else makes a pie using just canned pie filling such as blueberry, cherry, apple, etc and premade pie crust for an easy dessert, do you bake it? Technically it doesn’t need to be baked and I’ve done it both ways before and I’m not sure if there’s really a difference. Curious what other people do...

A fruit pie usually has a topping so it needs to be baked. I make my own crust for a fruit pie because of this while for custard type pies (chocolate, lemon pie, cheesecake) I use pre made crusts.
You could use a premade crust with a crumb topping.

Thanks but I’m not talking about when there’s a topping. I’m talking about just plain premade pie crust with pie filling which is still really yummy.

You can do a lemon pie in the pie crust then pour cherry pie filling on top. Its yum. Ill insert recipe here.
6oz sugar
5 eggs
Mini whip
Juice of lemon
Rind of lemon
Pie crust
Whisk altogether and pour into pie crust bake for 35mins. When cool pour cherry pie filling on top.

Thanks but I’m not asking for a recipe. I was just asking if people who make pie out of just pie filling and pie crust bake it or not. I’ve done both ways and I can’t really tell if there’s a difference so I was curious about people’s opinion who have done that as well.

I don’t understand. Pre-made crust is frozen. How can you not bake it? Unless you mean a graham cracker type crust and you’re just pouring the canned fruit in? That wouldn’t require baking but it sounds weird.

I know of two kinds of ready-made pie crust:
1. The frozen kind made from rolled-out dough. It is not pre-baked. Depending on the type of pie, you either bake it first and then add the filling (possibly baked again after as well), or fill first and then bake. I really don't think anyone would eat this type of crust raw, so this probably isn't what you mean.
2. The kind made from cookie crumbs, such as a graham cracker crust. Technically, you could use this one without baking, but it will be improved if you bake it first. "No-bake" pies usually call for the crust to be baked a little first.
If you have a fully-baked pie crust made from dough - I haven't see these in the stores, but perhaps you have - go ahead and eat it however you like. A pie with canned filling will probably taste better and have a better texture if baked briefly, but that's up to you.

I bake pie with canned filling. It's way better baked. I think they even need to be baked for the pie slices to hold. Otherwise they fall apart into a mush.

I’ve never seen or been served a pie in a pre made pie shell (the ones I’ve seen need to be baked before putting in filling) with just a can of pie filling (no topping) I think that’s why your question is confusing to some. Since all the pies I’ve see. Have a topping of some sort, they do need to be baked

I understand that you are talking about the gram cracker pie crusts. Those are not meant for fruit filling, although of course you can do whatever you want when you make food! These are perfect for cheesecake, brownie pie or chocolate chip cookie pie, or some type of custard. Like others have said, I would not put just stam a can of pie filling in and call it a day, I would do something more to it.

If you find it to be tasty, do it how you and your family likes it and who cares what any of us think?
If you are looking for an easy dessert with pie filling, how about a dump cake? Just take a can of pie filling (dont use blueberry, it'll turn green) and dump it in the baking dish. Then take a box mix of yellow cake, dump it over the pie filling. Then take a stick pr margarine, cube it, dot it all over the cake mix powder, and put it in the over for like 25-30 mins. Its really good and so easy!

Forget about toppings, I don’t think a canned pie filling will hold together if it’s not baked.

I'm not sure if I can explain this well, but I've found that baking it gives it more of a consistency- like it somewhat sets the filling

Perhaps OP means if you can pre-bake the empty pie shell and then pour in the can of filling. Then do you bake the filling?

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for.
Yes everyone I do use graham cracker crusts with a can of pie filling when I want a quick and tasty dessert. I grew up with that and guests would ask my mother what her recipe was because they loved it
My mother would always bake it so I’ve tried it like that but also tried not baking it and couldn’t really tell if there was a difference since I don’t do this that often it’s not like I’ve made pie back to back both ways to compare. So I was looking for other people who’ve made pies like this to give their input.
Does that clear up everyone’s questions?

Come to think of it Ive only tried not baking it when it’s been in the mini graham cracker pie crusts they sell in stores, so maybe that’s why it was fine because all the filling was contained vs in a regular size pie crust.

I apologize for sounding snarky and a few of you will get mad.
But does dumping a can of pie filling and box mix and sprinkling margarine all over the thing qualifies as cake? You know, like baking? Reminds me of kindergarden were we once got a box of cake mix, added water and poured it into a pan and into an oven.

No offence taken and not mad.
Honestly, who cares what it "qualifies" as? What does it matter? Not everyone wants to patchka and not everyone has the skills, time, or desire to make something more fancy. This dump cake is easy, cheap, and darn delicious. You do you and make what you feel "qualifies", and let others do what they like.
Want to hear my secret recipe for chicken? I put the chicken in a pan and sprinkle onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and onion soup mix. Add a drop of oil on top and put in the oven. Does that qualify as cooking? Sometimes I dump a jar of duck sauce over a chicken and throw that in the oven. Sometimes I do a bottle of BBQ sauce. Its all delicious and I'm not out to impress anyone, just to feed my family and sometimes guests.

Agreed. It’s kinda of like people telling me on this thread that what I’m describing with the way I make pie is not something they’ve ever been served. I’m totally not offended but the point of my original question on this thread was not about whether pie the way I make it is good enough to serve people...
But I do really appreciate people responding with their input on my question!
