I took my kids to the childrens museum today. My newly toilet trained almost 3 year old boy (think waist length hair) insisted he wants to go only to men's restroom. since, we already had 1 accident and I was out of clean clothes I decided not to argue the point, as long as he was willing to go. So I let him go in, and I am standing outside the door just in case he runs into problems. A man opens the door and starts asking "whose child is it? She shouldn't be here." I say "he is mine, and it's a boy." The man goes "oh" and then starts muttering something about letting little kids go to the bathroom by themselves, and what if they need help. He looked rather confused and disgruntles. And since this was maybe our second venture out in the public place it didn't even occur to me what it looks like when my "girl" goes into man's bathroom. Well, only three more weeks to upshern.

I agree with the man in your story.
I really don't think a kid that age should be allowed to enter a public restroom, especially the mens one, on their own.

Ditto that, although I can understand why you didn't want to waste time arguing with your son.

I would have just brought him into the girls bathroom ... peeing is an urgent fact - not a debate ... what if he couldn't reach the toilet on his own - there's plenty of time for him to be a "big boy" ...
but I could see why the man got confused ...

Actually it was a bathroom inside the children's museum, and I was right outside the door and could hear him. And I think he likes it better cause it's easier for him to use the urinal than the regular toilet. And anyway, last time I argued with a newly trained not quite 3 year old over which bathroom to use we ended up with some extra laundry to do.
