• Ezikiel's Vision of the "Chariot"

On the 5th of Tammuz of the year 3332 from creation (429 BCE), Ezikiel, the only one of the Prophets to prophesy outside of the Holy Land, beheld a vision of the Divine "Chariot" representing the spiritual infrastructure of creation

• Maharam Imprisoned

Rabbi Meir ben Baruch ("Maharam") of Rothenburg (1215?-1293), the great Talmudic commentator and leading Halachic authority for German Jewry, was imprisoned in the fortress at Ensisheim . A huge ransom was imposed for his release. The money was raised, but Rabbi Meir refused to allow it to be paid lest this encourage the further hostage taking of Jewish leaders. He died in captivity after seven years of imprisonment.

• R. Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch Born

Tammuz 12 is the birthday the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn of Lubavitch (1880-1950). This is also the day on which he was liberated from exile to the Soviet gulag 47 years later

• Liberation of R. Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch

On the 12th of Tammuz of 1927, the sixth Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn was officially granted release from his sentence of exile to Kastroma in the interior of Russia.

Twenty-seven days earlier, the Rebbe had been arrested by agents of the GPU and the Yevsketzia ("Jewish Section" of the Communist Party) for his activities to preserve Judaism throughout the Soviet empire and sentenced to death, G-d forbid. International pressure forced the Soviets to commute the sentence to exile and, subsequently, to release him completely. The actual release took place on Tammuz 13, and Tammuz 12-13 is celebrated as a "festival of liberation" by the Chabad-Lubavitch community.

• Passing of R. Chayim ben Attar (Ohr HaChayim)

Passing of the famed Torah scholar and mystic Rabbi Chayim ben Attar (1696-1743), author of the Ohr HaChayim commentary on the Torah. Born in Morocco, he also lived and taught in Algiers, Italy, Acco and Jerusalem, where he settled a year before his passing. Many stories are told of his holiness and greatness, and of the repeated unsuccessful attempts by Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov to reach the Holy Land and meet with him in the belief that together they could bring the Moshiach and the final redemption.

• Golden Calf Made; Hur Killed

In the year 2448 from Creation (1313 BCE), Tammuz 16 was the 40th day following the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, and the people of Israel wrongly expected Moses' return from the mountain (he would actually return on the following day). When their leader failed to return, they demanded from Aaron: "Make us a god that shall go before us". Hur (Moses' nephew, the son of Miriam and Caleb) tried to stop them and was killed by the mob. Aaron fashioned a calf of molten gold.

• Hebron Massacre

67 Jewish men, women and children were slaughtered, and scores wounded, raped and maimed, by their Arab neighbors in the city of Hebron, who rioted for three days amid cries of "Slaughter the Jews." The survivors fled to Jerusalem, and the ancient Jewish community of Hebron, which had lived in relative peace in the city for hundreds of years, was not revived until after Israel's capture of Hebron in the 1967 Six Day war.

Today, CHOF Menachem-Av is the Yom Hilulah (yahrzeit) of a Tzaddik, the day on which we commemorate the life of HaRav HaGaon, Hatzadik Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Schneersohn, the father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. R. Levi Yitzchok was directly descended from the oldest son of the Tzemach Tzedek (third Lubavitcher Rebbe) R. Boruch Shalom. to be continued, iyh

• Moses' parents remarry (1394 BCE)

Amram and Jocheved had separated because of Pharaoh's decree that all male Jewish babies be killed. Prompted by their six-year-old daughter Miriam's rebuke ("Pharaoh decreed againsat the males; you decreed against the males and the females") they remarried on the 7th of Elul of the year 2367 from creation (1394 BCE). Moses was born six months and one day later on Adar 7, 2368 (Talmud, Sotah 12b).

• Spies die (1312 BCE)

The Spies who slandered the Land of Israel died in the desert (Talmud, Sotah 35a; see Numbers 13-14 and text and links for Av 9 and Av 15).

• Nachmanides Renews Jerusalem community (1267)

Nachmanides (Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman, 1194-1270) arrived in Jerusalem, after being force to flee his native Spain (see "On This Date" for Av 12) and renewed its Jewish community there. The synagogue he established is functional today, having been restored following the liberation of the Old City during the Six-Day War in 1967

On the 10th of Elul of the year 1656 from creation (2105 BCE), as the Great Flood neared its end, Noah opened the window of the Ark and dispatched a raven to determine if the flood waters had begun to recede

15th of Elul. Founding of Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch, in the year 5657 (1897) by the fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe, the Rebbe RaShaB. The intent with which the Rebbe Rashab founded this Yeshiva was that the students would have the opportunity to study P'nimiyus HaTorah- the inner mystic dimensions of the Torah- with the same concentration as they usually devote to the study of Nigleh

He envisioned the yeshivah as a focal point for Jewish life throughout Russia, for the energy and enthusiasm stemming from this inspired environment of spiritual growth would ripple inside and out of the Jewish community.

The Rebbe saw the talmidim of Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim as the Chayolei Beis Dovid - soldiers of the House of David, whose efforts are focused on transforming the world into an environment conscious of Moshiach and awaiting his coming.

The Rebbe announced his intent in founding the Yeshiva on 15 Elul, at the Sheva Brochos of his son, the Frierdike Rebbe( RaYatz). The day that studies actually began was three days later on Chai Elul, 5657.( today, 108 years ago)

Birth of the Baal Shem Tov in 5458 (1698). The day his holy teacher1 and master appeared to him in 5484 (1724). The day the Baal Shem Tov became revealed2 in 5494 (1734).

Birth of the Alter Rebbe 5505 (1745).

Outline of the Baal Shem Tov's discourse3 on Shabbat Tavo, Chai (18th) Elul 5652 (1892), after Kabalat Shabbat:

It will be when you come into the land (eretz) that the Eternal your G-d gives you for an inheritance, and you will inherit it and dwell in it.4

The Midrash notes that eretz is an idiom of merutza (running) and of ratzon (will, desire). When you attain the level of ratzon, "desire,"5 that is a gift from Above and an inheritance for every one of Israel, then your avoda is "...you will dwell in it" - to internalize all you have attained, "bringing it down" in a settled manner.6

"You shall take...and place it in a basket,"7 - draw down the (spiritual) lights into (appropriate) vessels.

"You shall go to the place the Eternal your G-d will choose"8 - a Jew must know that when he goes from one place to another, he is not going on his own, but is being directed from Above. And the intention and purpose in this is...

"...to cause His Name to dwell there"9 - that is, to make G-d known in his (that Jew's) locale.10

After Maariv the Baal Shem Tov repeated this discourse and added:

"It will be when you come..." For you to attain the level of "desire"11 etc. it is necessary that... "you shall go to the place, etc... to cause His Name to dwell there." You are to utterly dedicate yourself to making G-d known there. How does one "make G-d known"? With a b'racha and a verse of Tehillim.

• Passing of Maharal (1609)

Elul 18 is the yahrtzeit of Rabbi Yehudah Loewe, the "Maharal" of Prague (1525-1609), outstanding Torah scholar, philosopher, Kabbalist and Jewish leader. Popularly known for creating a "golem" (clay man) to protect the Jewish community of Prague from the frequent threat of blood libels.

• Baal Shem Tov Born (1698)

Birthday of Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (1698-1760), founder of the Chassidic movement.

• Chassidic Movement Founded (1734)

After many years as a member of the society of hidden tzaddikim living under the guise of an ignorant clay-digger, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov was instructed by his masters to reveal himself and begin to publicly disseminate his teachings. This he did on his 36th birthday, Elul 18, 5494 (1734).

• 1st Chabad Rebbe Born (1745)

Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812), founder of the "Chabad" branch of Chassidism, was born on Elul 18 of the year 5505 from creation -- the 47th birthday of his "spiritual grandfather", Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (Rabbi Schneur Zalman was the disciple of the Baal Shem Tov's disciple and successor, Rabbi DovBer of Mezeritch).

• Creation (3761 BCE)

The 1st day of creation, on which G-d created existence time , matter darkness and light was the 25th of Elul. (Rosh Hashanah, on which we mark "the beginning of Your works", is actually the 6th day of creation, on which the world attained attained the potential for the realization of its purpose, with the creation of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve. Rosh Hashanah is therefore the day from which the Jewish calendar begins to count the years of history; the 1st day of creation thus occurred on the 25th of Elul of what is termed -1 from creation.

• Jerusalem Walls Rebuilt (335 BCE)

The rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem -- which had been in ruins since the destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians 88 years earlier -- was completed by Nehemia on Elul 25 of the year 3426 from creation (335 BCE) as related in the Book of Nehemia (ch. 6).

• Passing of Rabbi Elazar (102 CE)

Passing of the Talmudic sage Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochaiin the year 102 CE.

Moses was born in Egypt on the 7th of Adar of the year 2368 from creation (1393 BCE) and passed away on his 120th birthday -- Adar 7, 2488 (1273 BCE)
