I am expecting twins in adar, I am 23 weeks and I Had gone through lots of research to select a practice and hospital I was comfortable with. I chose Boro Park OBGYN at Maimonides and was working with a midwife. While I wasnt crazy about Maimonides the fact that I had a midwife made me much more comfortable. Unfortunaltey, Maimonides changed their rules and are no longer midwives to even be present at multiple births! oh no!!

What should I do? If I were to switch to a different hospital, any suggestions where to go? I am naturally minded person and barring an emergency would like to be somewhere where the hospital/doctor respects my desires. I am scared,no mortified by the high episiotamy and c sectuion rates.

I did meet with one of the doctors at BP OBGYN and it could be because I was the last person in the office (and I was late) but I did not feel comortable at ALL. I felt like my concerns were totally not addressed. HELP ADVISE ME. also I have united helath care community plan

If you want a natural/vaginal birth, then you need a doctor with TONS of experience with this. I had my twins vaginally for several reasons. #1 - I was lucky, #2 - my doctor had tons of experience, #3 - they met all of the criteria for this. #4- I was lucky.

I delivered at white plains hospital, so that is too far for you.

Maimonides is not a bad place to deliver twins as g-d forbid if you need a high level NICU they have. My SIL delivered twins naturally with BP OB/GYN. There is one DR there that is very experienced with deliver twins naturally. When she was about 39 1/2 weeks and having some contractions the doctor told her to go in the next morning when the experience Dr ( I think it was Dr Tropper) is on call and he delivered her.

What if you go into labor when he's not on call though? He's not going to come just because you're delivering twins.

I don't either think Maimonides is the best place for a twin delivery. Although I don't have experience with twins, I use an excellent group in Mount Sinai where they see multiples every day; Maternal Fetal Associates - Rebarber, Bender, Silverstein etc.. You can call them to see if they accept your insurance. I think NYU is a great hospital too. IMHO, I wouldn't settle for anything less than these two hospitals. Their number is 212 722-7409. Good Luck!

I would tend to agree that Maimonides is probably not the place to go. While they may have a NICU (which is an essential because multiples are often premature), Maimonides is not one of those hospitals with a stellar reputation. You would be better to consider one of the big Manhattan hospitals like Mt. Sinai, NYU or Columbia-Presbyterian. Especially if you are trying for a normal delivery. It becomes essential to have someone who is highly experienced at vaginal twin birth.

Happy12, is the Dr. Tropper you are referring to, Pam Tropper, by any chance? If it is, I know her and she is very good and very experienced in the normal delivery of twins.

Still, I would seriously consider delivering elsewhere.

I will also chime in and add Maimonides is not the best place to deliver twins. You want the best doc and the best nicu standing behind you. It can have lifelong implications.

Dr. Troper of BP OBGYN is a male.

I agree with the previous posters that say don't go to Maimonides. DON'T DO IT!!

I gave birth to my twins there. All I will say is its a huge nes that me and my two adorable babies are alive. They messed up a lot and really put 3 lives in danger. Please don't give birth in Maimonides if you have a choice. I would use someone in NYU or Mount Sinai or Columbia...a real hospital.

If I can add a PSA: Nobody should give birth in Maimonides!!! They often run out of beds in the L&D ward. My cousin delivered her baby on the cold floor of the waiting room because they had no bed for her. Even after her baby was born, they didn't have where to put her! It was an extremely traumatic experience.

How recently? Didn't they renovate the maternity ward?

Yes.

This has never happened since they added the ward.
I can think of 10 reasons not to deliver there but this ain't one of them.

Rebarber doesn't accept that insurance. It's a Medicaid plan. You won't get into most of the MFMs at Manhattan hospitals with it.

Dr. Mok accepts either HIP or Health first, I'm not sure which one and Dr. Sheinfeld accepts almost all MCD plans. You can switch plans whike pregnant. I don't know if any of them are experienced with twin deliveries but they're both good doctors that deliver in Manhattan hospitals.

didn't any of you notice that OP said she's "natural-minded" and chose the group b/c she wanted the midwife? do you really think the high risk doctors mentioned above will be a good fit?
and if the pregnancy is normally progressing, why must a doctor have "tons of experience" to deliver twins vaginally? give me a break

I used BP OB-GYN when my twins were born 16 years ago. (that was b4 they had midwives and were only 5 in the group) I met all of the docs, none expressed concern about my trying for a vaginal delivery. (and yes, one of the docs - not saying which one - did give me his pager # with the offer to come in for me if he wasn't on call)

I'll admit that the NICU was less than impressive. care was adequate, but when I mentioned kangaroo care or putting both babies in one incubator, they looked at me like I was nuts. and they didn't tell me there was a pumping room... But none of that threatened my babies' health. then again, my boys were born at almost 36 weeks and didn't really need much, b"H.

forgot to mention - both were born vaginally, 5 minutes apart
OP - hatzlacha in your search.

Dr. Roshan of NYU is high risk and EXTREMELY natural minded. They're a gr8 grp of I think 3 drs all with the same theory.

yup - listen to the others- Maimonides is not a good place to have a baby, especially two. I gave birth there twice and it really was a miracle from G-d that it was natural both times and everything ultimately ended well. it reminded me a little bit of giving birth in the 1800's - not a good thing.

Boro Parker here. Can someone elaborate on why they don't recommend Maimonides for giving birth rather than just throwing that out? Getting nervous here.

Jughead - the reason is because many doctors today do not have experience delivering twins vaginally and many will not even do it.
