I bought very expensive silverware from a well known dept store in ny
I threw out the individual boxes that each place setting came in.
I brought it back to the store to return-
they said they would not take it back because I did not have the individual
boxes-I did have the receipt-

write to the management. sometimes they will override an existing policy. The cashiers know only what they know and can't deal with anything outside the box. (no pun intended! LOL ) f'rinstance, they know that a driver's license is a valid ID. Don't try to show them a passport! As far as they are concerned, you have to have a driver's license, period.

Did you toivel and use them already?

Your best bet may be ebay, but without a box, it's pretty hard to get full price.

I did not toivel them!
I would get nothing for them on Ebay.
They made a big deal that I did not have the individual boxes that they
came in.
I am not so upset - I could use them for shabbos or yomtov or pesach!
and I have children to pass them on to!
the kids liked that idea!

If you think about it, they are probably right. There's not much they can do without the original boxes. They def. cannot resell it this way - there's no reason they should suffer the loss. If you had come without a receipt, I could see a store bending their policy. Sorry, just my opinion.

Dear Momoftwims,

I'm sorry to hear your plight. I think that your experience is typical of the direction that most stores are headed in now-a-days. Stores are having a harder time making a profit and many won't take back returns after a certain time period or w/o receipt, original packaging, etc.

As an owner of a small business, I can understand that if someone returns something (in new condition but with the packaging/tags removed), how can it be sold it to someone else as a new item? BTW, I never used to consider the store's perspective until I was in their shoes!

Don't mean to rant... just trying to explain their situation.

Oh, one last thought... If the silverware maker has an outlet store, they will probably let you exchange the set there for another item.

How can you throw boxes away of things you aren't sure you are going to keep, unless you buy th em at a discount place that only has returns for a week or a month or whatever.

It usually helps if you speak to a manager rather than a cashier. The manager usually has more of a say in things.

Next time, keep everything together, including the receipt (even a gift receipt would help). Staple it and bag it and keep it until you're sure.

If I buy stuff at a discount place and it's a time limit on returns, I note that in my calendar/date book.

And if I can't make up my mind, I return it. If you aren't sure, you prob. don't need it.

The receipt even said that you can return items for a
10 percent restocking fee.

I always assume that when you want to return something, as long as it's not defective, you need to have all the original packaging.

Like other posters said, why should the store lose money just because you changed your mind?

No they can't.

And how do they know that you didn't use it? Once a person doesn't have original packaging, they assume that it's been used. Otherwise, why is the packaging gone?
