People are buying for others, sourcing for those in need, donating, trading...
My heart breaks for stressing in this crisis. Crazy what we are "getting used to".

Can someone not arrange a huge lift from a different country? Israel, UK etc?
Loads of people that I know get free on prescription from the NHS. Surely pharmacies here can ship them out to the US. Its terrible to think that they're are hungry babies 😢 I can't imagine that!

Wow that’s pretty scary. They’re saying to contact your doctor or local hospital if you can’t get the formula your baby needs. Unbelievable that it’s come to this.

My orders from from stop and shop and Walgreens and cvs as well got cancelled. The shelves are empty in store don’t know why it shows up on Instacart. While people should definitely contact their pediatricians and local hospitals and are doing so I don't know that they can meet the need or what are their policies Oy. Still worth trying.
Obviously anyone who has in their home and isn't using or needing is donating to local chesed funds who are as always stepping up to do whatever possible B"H.

For those in Brooklyn (or if you know someone who lives there who can ship to you), the jewish supermarkets like moisha's and goldberg's have tons of formula. And I don't think they have limits on how much you can buy.

But babies are hungry. Where I live there is nothing on the shelf for infants at most stores. I am not saying no CY or specialty options. The pharmacy had nothing. This mom found at a target a single container.
This shortage is serious. |
You say convenience I say mental health. You never know the whole story. I tell people I don't like nursing and I'm sure they think I'm just a lazy mother who isn't willing to put in the work but the truth is that when I nurse I'm miserable. Even if I only nurse for a few weeks it takes me months to recover emotionally. I knew I wasn't happy buy thought maybe I was just prone to ppd and only realized just how bad it was when I finally decided not to nurse from the beginning and I was finally happy postpartum. I actually feel bad for the babies I nursed because it affected out bonding.

I’m guessing those are the generic ones for babies who can tolerate any brand. Those are also available online. The hardest hit are those who need specialty formulas.

Often the only few items left are the most expensive premade individually packaged ready made bottles which you just cap. Completely unacceptable and no rational reason for it despite the many excuses made.
G-d Willing this is resolved quickly for the good!
ps it is not so simple to have someone else nurse your child, like donating blood the breastmilk and donor would really have to be screened first and might not even know what might be in their breastmilk.
Were I desperate I would do this only with a trusted friend or family member if had to. There may be breast milk gemachs or something I don't know. |
Magan David Adam in Israel runs a milk bank. I met the person who runs it and she told they get the most opposition from, you guessed it, formula companies!!! But its definitely possible. They sort the milk by age btw...preemies get milk from preemie moms etc. I think for a baby who needs life saving formula kashrus (eg if the mom keeps kosher) is not a concern. Since babies who need treif formulas are allowed them.

Yes. The grocery stores in lkwd near me also have all the basic ones. They don’t have what I’m looking for tho. its not so simple, although imports have been stepped up when possible. https://fortune.com/2022/05/17.....smca/
From the article: A 2019 study found that major European formula brands met almost all of the FDA’s requirements for baby formula, yet authors warned that differing instructions on how to use European formula might confuse Americans.
Probably the instructions are in ml not oz and it is assumed parents are unable to google.

No one needs to justify their use of formula to anyone else, and everyone should have equal access. Limiting the amount someone buys in a particular store may be an option. No one has more of a right to be able to obtain formula than another person.

This is ridiculous though. They'd rather hungry baby's and stressed out mums?! It's all about the money as usual.

I think the FDA or whoever are working on lightening less important rules such as the order ingredients are listed in.

People have been trying to smuggle in formula for years because European formula is known to be higher quality but doesn’t meet ridiculous FDA requirements. I think it has something to do with iron levels? I sure hope they change those rules fast.
