If you would ever be that desperate please reach out to a nursing mom you known and ask if she can nurse your baby a few times a day.
I think many of us, maybe even most, would gladly help out.
If you wanted to pay us the cost of the formula you're not buying, that's nice, but at least IMO not necessary.

So grateful not to be in this position. Makes me feel literally sick that mothers and babies are dealing with this! And the lack of response or abusurdity of response on the part of those whose job is to keep things moving in this country is chilling! Really hard to believe! Says a lot about a lot of things including priorities! |
I think mothers who ARE bh able to nurse (or express milk for their babies) without any problems should definitely do so, even if its not so convenient, so that there is more formula available for those babies who really need it because their mothers can't nurse for any reason. It is heartbreaking reading about mothers diluting formula or limiting feeds for their babies because they can't get formula. (I'm sure it is not convenient for women to express milk for milk banks, but yet they do so.)
Its different to a flour shortage. No one person eats only flour. They can eat rice, other grains, fruit, veggies etc. (those of us who don't eat gebroks managed fine on pesach, even if we don't much like matza, as do gluten free people)
But hopefully this shortage will end soon.

Your post hurts me.
I have IGT, which means that although my body produces breast milk, I have almost no breast tissue to hold the milk. My babies latch beautifully, great strong suck,...and get approx ONE TABLESPOON of milk per feeding. I simply have almost no breast tissue to hold milk.
I’ve been to multipule professionals who all agreed my babies need formula.
It hurts me so much to formula feed. I’m so grateful to the formula makers. And yet it hurts so much. I wish I could breastfeed. Your comments and judgements, and attitutude I’ve seen from others on this site as well really hurt.
Let’s be aware that there are valid reasons why ppl genuinely can’t nurse. And if you’re lucky enough not to know about those reasons...say TYH, and don’t hurt others.

Ugh some of these posts are so judgmental.
I actually breastfeed exclusively and it’s very difficult for me (baby is very fussy) is but I would never judge someone who chooses to give formula. What the heck?

BF here. And I never judged on formula use. Fed is best. My thoughts were- however you did it, as long as baby is fed nutrition, that is 100% fine.
However, when supply is uncertain and such uncertainty can mean your baby goes hungry-- I do not agree with those choosing formula, who could nurse, just out of convenience.
I know of someone. No medical reason why they couldnt nurse. No allergies or crazy diets needed. No medicine or medical reason. No DMer. But is pregnant and stockpiled lots of formulas because she didnt want to nurse... she admitted it was for convenience only.
Again- anyone who cant nurse/pump (or already stopped nursing/pumping)-- different situation. Whether due to medicine, inability to produce, having twins, Dmer, medical issues... if you can't, you cant. And should use formula during the shortage and whenever. No judgement. Fed is best. But when it is so limited-- anyone who can try, should try to nurse. If you find you cant- get formula. But dont start off without even trying (eg first baby so dont know if you could) if you dont have a reason to not nurse.
A local mom reached out on a chat asking for anything because everywhere was sold out. Her baby needed to be fed. She was searching stores as no one had spares and BH one store had a container. But babies are hungry. Where I live there is nothing on the shelf for infants at most stores. I am not saying no CY or specialty options. The pharmacy had nothing. This mom found at a target a single container.
This shortage is serious.

If I was coming from Israel to the USA in August is there a way I can bring formula and donate or sell at cost price somewhere?
We'd by flying into Miami. I'd love to be able to bring. We're packing lightly so we can to a proper shopping spree in America stuff to bring back to Israel so I should have lots of room on the way there.

This shortage is serious. | I disagree. No one should feel guilty for making the choice in advance to use formula. Keep in mind that convenience here is not like making a 10 min drive vs a 15 min drive. It means that if they make the choice to go formula from the get go that the new mother can get good nights of sleep right away (hospital or baby nurse can give bottles throughout the night for baby and mom doesn’t need to pump). It means that moms who work or are in school will not need to pump while they are out. That is a huge deal! The whole recovery is so different and those that start off nursing (and then switch gl formula) lose that all as they wake up for night nursing. Formula moms get to leave baby with a sitter almost right away and get to go out and enjoy life. Ladies are expected to be superheros these days - taking care of the house, the family, working , etc and we shouldn’t be adding any more to that.

If you’re in nyc, some are available for pickup, and online there are some toddler ones available. If you’re baby is older than 6 months maybe ask the doc if you can give the toddler version.
I’m assuming soy or plant based aren’t an option.

Thanks Zahava! I ordered and it got cancelled. I also went into the store and they were out of stock. Every time I pass a pharmacy or type store I check. Exactly, my baby is on comfort formula.
We're in the uk, there is a slight difficulty in getting the comfort one sometimes but I see loads of the regular formula here.
Maybe I should buy a few at a time, it just gets expensive to buy a lot in one go, even though I know he needs it and I don't plan to switch to regular formula until he's 1. Then maybe for a couple of months to get him onto cows milk if he can tolerate it.
He's 7.5 months and eating solids as well so I'm not too worried.
I feel for all of you with very young babies who are struggling to find.
Why is there a shortage?

You are kind of the poster mom for why some of us are saying that if you CAN nurse, DO nurse, and save the formula for those babies who truly need it because their mothers CAN'T nurse.
I hope you have a generous supply of formula for your baby.
