What is the oldest kid you made Aliya with (from US) and what are pros, cons, advice... what's too old? Will they adapt?
My husband has half mentioned making Aliya recently. I'm not sure how serious it is yet. Our oldest is 10.5yo. My other kids are 7.5, 4.5, and 1.5. The younger 2 would acclimate ok over time I guess?. But I'm nervous about my older 2. because I feel they may be too old and am unsure how they'd handle the language barrier/change.
My husbands brother (and his wife and kids) live in Israel, in an area that is mainly hebrew speaking and I feel like we'd end up there since that's one of the draws. (Amongst other reasons).
I'm not super attached to the area we live in, nor the school My kids go to. At one point I was, but over time the tuition has gone up and the middos of classmates have gone down. 😢
We have a house. I like the house a lot. But not a factor for reason to stay. I'm not very materialistic.
It mostly is the age of kids. And my own language barrier, kids language barrier, and there is a war in Israel now,so I'm hesitant about that too.
But mainly now, just looking for insight/info 9n language and acclimating for kids. (I've lived in Israel when I was in my early 20s, so I'm not so nervous on my part)

I made aliyah with a bunch of teenagers. Each is one is doing great. Their hebrew is fluent. They live and work and go to school with native Israelis.

Wow! Thank you! 😊 how old was your oldest when you moved and how was their hebrew before?
My kids have been in hebrew day school obviously, but have very little hebrew language skills.
I know there is Ulpan when u make Aliya. Maybe we'd do some here to before we move, if we do.
I have a feeling if we do make Aliya it would be a few months to yr or something.

I have so many friends who made aliyah with pre teens and even teens. If the kids are on board, they will likely do great.
Involve them on the planning and details of your aliyah. Can they FaceTime with their Israeli cousins and try to start leaning some conversational Hebrew?
All the kids I know are speaking fluent Hebrew now.
If you can swing it to move this summer with your oldest being 11 you should be fine.

NOT AT ALL. My kids have had a Jewish day school background in Hebrew so that's a big no.... My 13yr old is very motivated so he has been practicing 5 minutes of Duolingo every day for the last year but the rest of us have not. We are very much paying the price $ to move into a soft landing area that has support for olim children. I.e. RBS/Ranana/Modiin/Efrat etc.

My husband was almost 11 when his family made aliyah. He acclimated pretty fast, and he says that within a few months he could communicate well and understand everything that was happening in school. Today he speaks fluent Hebrew with no accent and people who know him never believe that he wasn't born here.

I keep hearing overthe years people saying that younger is better and once they are older it's impossible. I'm happy to hear that it could work!

This is my thread from a few years ago. Most is still accurate. I read through it quickly and a few things that are different now:
1. My kids have tons of native Israeli friends now.
2. There is no way we only spend $3,000 a month!
3. My husband's original job has turned into a freelance type situation since his side job has grown and BH has become his main parnassah.
