You aren’t doing anything wrong! He’s a newborn! Newborns aren’t supposed to have schedules. Don’t worry! Also, babies keep changing. In a week or two he probably won’t be doing this. Newborns also tend to be nocturnal and after a few weeks flip their schedules to be more awake by day and sleep longer stretches at night. By 6 months usually they are down to 2 naps a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Don’t worry you got this

He is not supposed to but he needs help at this stage. 6 weeks is the peak of fussiness. Evening time is notorious that babies go crazy then. He does need sleep. But it’s notmal that he has a difficult time

What happens at 1?
Does he sleep straight until 7 no feeds?
If so, that's very very typical at this age

Newborns are nocturnal and it’s normal they stay up late at night.
No bedtime for a baby that age.

He wakes up at night every 2-4 hours.

Yeah I wouldn’t try s bedtime that early. I didn’t put mine to sleep until around 10 at that age. And I went to sleep when they did. My baby would wake every 2 hours to eat also.

Breathe in, breathe out. You got this!!
You're not doing anything wrong!
6.5 weeks is really very tiny and babies don't have a schedule yet. Every day will look different.
Anything is normal at that point, especially being fussy and unpredictable!!
Take it day by day, soothe him however you can and try to sleep when he does!
Officially putting them by the sunlight helps them regulate night and day but I haven't seen any difference.
An interesting fun fact my dr told me, when we're pregnant and moving around all day it rocks the baby to sleep. When we sleep at night we're still and the baby wakes up. That's why they're born "jet lagged"!
Good luck!!

Let him nap 3x and them wear him out with a nice long bath. Feed him, and he should go to a sleep.
But I start much later, as I go to sleep very late.
I go to sleep around 1:00 at night so I put my babies in about 2 hrs before. Otherwise, when I want to get some sleep, they wake right up..

But why doesn’t he at least nap a little in between the afternoon and 1 am? I wouldn’t mind putting him in later but why is he not taking naps?

Sounds like that's his "daytimes". Patience and sunlight help.

Many babies (not all) have one longer period when they are awake. It seems like yours is at the worst time for parents and a couple.
I wish I could give you advice on how to help but I can't remember and I don't think I managed with my kids.
I do remember a segula for them to wake up is to put hot food on your plate (or croutons in soup 😭) but I don't think I had one for putting them to sleep

😂
Pretty sure the segulah for them to fall asleep is to have an errand in 5 minutes you need to run to with the baby.

Sounds about right for a baby that age.
Their sleeping patterns change every few weeks for the first few months.
Lots of babies get their days and nights mixed up.
Don't feel bad! You're doing a great job!

To clarify, it's not "typical" that he's awake from 6:45-1, but every baby is really doing their own thing at this age. If he seems content enough, I'd just give him time to figure it out. If he's screaming in misery from being overtired, that's a different story. I've spoken with many sleep trainers (unfortunately both my kids started off as horrible sleepers) and they all say at this age, the babies are "updating" so frequently that there isn't much point in intervention unless something is truly wrong.

He naps up to two hours about 4 times a day?
What am I doing wrong? |
Bedtime at 6:45 may be too early for a 6.5 week old. Try for a later bedtime between 8-10 and keep your baby up for an hour to an hour and a half before bedtime. Try to give an extra large feeding after the last nap and also right before bedtime.

because u are putting him to bed to early. create a nighttime routine - feed, burp, change diaper, sleep sack, noise machine, dark room, shema put down with paci to teach him what night is. they don't naturally know. During the day, make him nap in a room with light so that he knows it is still the daytime. Put him to sleep later, dont put him down in bed so early.
Look up the website whattoexpect and research wake windows to set a tentative schedule - not a real one, but tentative and flexible.

So he napped at 8 for two hours, 11 for an hour and a half, and he’ll probably want to sleep at 2 for 2 hours. And then after that he just doesn’t nap unless I hold him and doesn’t fall asleep for any stretches
He just is up, kvetches for paci when he’s not hungry |
why are u putting him in to take a nap at 8? that is very early. try to delay each naptime, starting with the first one so that the long awake stretch is later - so he will be more tired when u put him down between 8-10.
