I work in healthcare. I’m going to be asking for a raise, I am about a year overdue for one and hoping to ask for more than usual. I have been invaluable to my boss I.e. before he goes away on vacation I’m the one he “puts in charge” and I basically take over his workload as much as I can, I don’t get paid more for this. I know I can use this to help me, but:
My question is this: I found out that my coworker who has just joined the facility is getting paid 6k more than me, because she was filling out a form in front of me and didn’t hide the paper so in a glance in her direction I couldn't miss her salary in big letters. I also found out that my facility placed an offer on indeed-an entry level position going for a similar amount as this coworker. I feel gypped.

Can I use these two points as “leverage” for getting a higher raise than what they might offer me?
A few people will be getting raises at the same time and I want to make sure I am getting what I deserve.

You definitely can use those two items as proof of your worth - but I would focus on the Indeed advertisement, it looks less petty.

Definitely mention the indeed listing. Not your coworkers though that could cause issues with salary sharing amongst colleagues some businesses take that seriously and you don’t want her getting in trouble.

You can also ask and see what other places are offering and you need to decide what will you do if you don’t get the raise you are expecting. Will you leave?

It's illegal to forbid salary sharing among coworkers.

This, be prepared to leave if they refuse to pay your worth.

I hear. So no, I wouldn’t leave, but I don’t mind asking for something higher and them rejecting it. I just want to ask for the maximum and do whatever I can to convince them. I realize that they may go back to my coworker if I mention her so I guess I won’t.
