What motivated you?
What helped?
What tools from your own childhood do you use now?
Spin off of the potching thread.
I remember being scared of the potch I don’t think I changed any behavior or learned anything because of it though.

Eventually I matured. I realized I can treat other people kindly and be treated that way back. (mostly. besides a few "star BY girls" who made me feel like dirt.) I wanted to grow up, to work on myself. I was a late bloomer w undiagnosed inattentive ADHD.

Having to sit outside the classroom again, then being able to see my mother crying in the principal’s office through the blinds. And finally being introduced to a warm resource room teacher. Change didn’t happen that minute but it was a catalyst for a 10 year old.

I kept getting punished with harsher and harsher punishments (nothing truly abusive though). Eventually I learned I was a bad person unless I behaved perfectly and so I shut down all my feelings and became a perfectionist. Caused me mental health issues that I passed down to my own child. Working to undo the damage now. I don't believe it's too late.
(Sharing this for all the people who believe that punishment works. I guess it depends on your goal. It wasn't till I started therapy as an adult that I learned skills that work for me to help myself.)
