We are a family with little kids currently living in Israel. My husband wants to move to the US (Lakewood) ASAP. I've been pushing him to wait until the end of the school year because it doesn't seem practical to me to move in middle of the year and put the kids into a new environment.
So I'm just trying to find out - realistically, how likely is it that we'd be able to get our kids into school in the middle of the year in Lakewood? Let's say in one month from now? How about after pesach? (that seems very unlikely to me...) We have a girl in primary, a boy a year below who probably needs a place with small classes and individualized help, and a girl in nursery.

I think coming from Israel is an area they might make exceptions. My kids in Lakewood had kids transfer mid year because of a move. But you should start contacting them from Israel and don’t wait until you move.

School starts with primary here, so the younger two would be in playgroup.

People do it all the time. It's worth trying to get in for sure. Tbh it may be harder to get your son into a good place than your daughter. And your son is not even school age.

since your son is preschool age this year you would probably require a boe placement, something like stars. it's a 90 day process and that would have to be done while you are locally I believe.

What do you lose by trying to get them in now? Only your primary age child needs a placement. The youngest just needs a play group where there are always openings but you need to know your location first. The boy under primary is a challenge but not specific to the time of year. He's not going to be ready for school unless you're Chasidish. So you'd be looking for one of the special ed places who will take you mid-year but that's a whole other story getting that that type of help.

You might as well start now (except for your playgroup kid). You can move once your kids have a place.

My son just moved to from Israel.
Please note that acceptance in primary works differently than in Israel depending on birthdays.
When is your dd's birthday?
My granddaughter was in primary in Israel but went back a year when she got here.

My daughter is in January. What is the cutoff in Lakewood? Is it different for boys?

Girls CURRENTLY in primary have their birthdays between Oct 2018 and Dec 2019.
Absolutely deadline of Dec 31, 2019.

Boys going into primary have their birthdays between September 2019 and December 2020 but the November and December 2020 kids mostly will not go to primary.
