I just bought my kids a 50$ camera on Amazon for chanukah. I'm sure the pictures will be terrible and the camera itself is junk and will break but so what? It's a fraction of the price
Anyways the fancy ones break too
And in terms of quality of the pictures - who cares if they are bad? Your not hanging them on your wall? They are just for memories sake. |
I have the $50 Amazon camera. It’s a child’s toy, imo. It’s not fair to give that to girl over bas mitzvah. And, yes, partially because all their friends have much better.

Why is all this expensive stuff so normal and mainstream? |
Unfortunately it's extremely difficult to find good cameras today for a normal price, due to smartphones
It's a big problem.
That's why we are searching.....

I once tried going the cheap camera route. It was the biggest waste of money. Horrible pictures. It was extremely frustrating to use. And it broke after a few months. So it was $50 thrown in the garbage.
I have canon cameras bH working 4 years with no issue. It is at least money that was well spent. Unfortunately then they were $200. Now $500…
They have been out of stock and impossible to find for 2 years now.
I recently saw canon cameras included in a list of inflation. Now I see why.
If you want a cheap camera for little kids get the black and white insta print cameras. They are $25 and fun. But not for a teen.

They all broke within a week. Was $50 in the garbage.

Not fair?? Why is it fair for parents to feel they have to buy a $500 camera for each of their teens? Maybe if everyone stopped going along with every craziness they couldn't afford the pressure would decrease a bit. But no. Every teen NEEDS a Canon camera. A Michelle watch. A Stanley cup. A designer backpack and coat. And on and on. And let's all blindly follow the herd, buy things we can't really afford, and complain about it.

My DH bought me a Canon camera about 8 years ago. It was in the 200$ range. From the start the picture quality was terrible, I guess since that's on the low range. I was fine with that.
But After a couple years one of the kids spilled some water near it- no, it did not fall in a pool or anything. We dried it quickly with a blow dryer, put it in rice. Now it turns on but still a lot of the functions don't work, lens is cloudy...
So that's $200 in the garbage.
I wonder are the $750 ones at least water proof?

I chalk this up to the price of having a smart phone free home. It’s a sacrifice for Hashem IMO. if we would be like the rest of the world, our teens would all have iPhones that take really good pictures. It’s the price we pay to hold ourselves against the tide and not feel like we’re missing out on kosher thinks like taking pictures.

This camera KODAK PIXPRO FZ55-RD has good reviews on Amazon and is $119. There are cheaper options besides for Canon. Why does every teen need the same exact thing?

Lasting a couple of years and then breaking from spilled water is not money in the garbage. Breaking in a week from regular usage is money in the garbage.

I was and understood that my parents couldn't afford every last thing I wanted. And I was confident enough bh not to need everything exactly the same as everyone else. Teach your child to think for themselves and they don't have to just follow.

It needs to be a reputable seller. The battery went soon after we bought it and we ordered a knockoff replacement. We also bought a very used camera from the Canon Elph series from someone I know locally. The flash went after a year or two of use. We were able to get that repaired. It’s a risk buying used, I won’t lie.
On the flipside, my upstairs neighbor got a camera from the powershot series for her bat mitzvah and it needed a very expensive lens repair not long after, and it was brand new. So cameras break regardless. Best to spend the least amount of money possible.

Yup, and my parents were BH well off and I consider myself spoiled. I got a lot of what I wanted ++.
But I would never want a $700 camera. Even now. Too much responsibility and agmas Nefesh if it's breaks. I'm saying this as an adult, all the more so for a young teen.
I remember girls in camp 15+ years ago with those expensive cameras. No one was allowed to touch them, so they were never in their own pictures , lol. they didn't bring them on most trips, for sure not boating or water trips.
You know what they used them for? To take pics of the empty bunkhouse and camp grounds/scenery to show to their parents when they got home. Yippee.
