Hidden LARGE expenses is very different than luxuries. A dentist visit is NOT a luxury. |
This. Dental work is not a luxury. People sometimes have to postpone dental work due to the cost which is very sad but that doesn't make dental work a luxury
As someone else said, spending money on anything other than rice and beans and two outfits per person from the thrift shop doesn't make it a luxury!

This site is ridiculous.
Dental work is not a luxury.
Therapy for survival is not a luxury.
Car repairs are not a luxury

Thank you! Smh
And yes I am deep in debt, but those are NOT luxuries. The scarcity mindset on this website is sometimes a bit much.

So I’m not usually one of those who thinks everything is a luxury. But something about laying down over 2k just for myself? Like I was thinking about my sis in laws who have blackened teeth because they likely can’t afford the expense… and here I am just casually doing it.
I grew up only having dental work done through Medicaid. Which means the bare minimum. Like I have a 20 yr old root canal that never got a crown and another one that had to be pulled because the temporary crown they put in kept coming off so eventually the tooth broke. My father never wanted to pay for an implant and now the gap is too closed.
So for me, just walking in getting top notch dental work, putting down 2k and walking out feels very luxurious.
And it’s not like I don’t have other luxuries in my life.

My therapist made $30,000 from me this year.
Then we have my husbands therapist, couples counseling that we just started plus psychiatrists.

Wow I wasn’t expecting these responses! Thought I’d get shot down for bragging or something.
Happens to be I stopped therapy years ago because I couldn’t stomach putting down so much money just to sit on a couch and talk to someone. It felt weird.
Why do I feel this way?

Obviously you don't need therapy that badly. Not everyone needs therapy though in the frum world it appears that way....

Its obviously not one session a week. Its 2 different therapist and its a total of 3 sessions per week. Yeah, life is hectic and I work full time...

My hidden luxuries include cleaning help and takeout. Why? Because I'm on chemo and barely hanging on. I also work full time and am my kids primary caretaker. So what people don't see is that without these types of luxuries, we literally wouldn't have food on the table or a semi-clean home because I'm exhausted and sick. Normalcy for my kids and myself is everything now so yes, I'll splurge when others would say it's foolish.

I can relate to this. "One" of my therapist gets over 36k from my sessions per year. And I can't survive without it so there is no thought of cutting any of those sessions.
I do see massive changes and it is worth every dollar. So no complains ever from my side of town on this expense. But therapy is a huge expense.

Just to say, filling cavities are not a luxury. Tooth infections can be dangerous and infection the brain if not treated properly.

I’ve had these cavities for 10+ years… finally decided to just take care of it. Especially since one was becoming very obvious. Hence the cosmetic part.

Right I don’t drive. But I could’ve taken public transportation so yeah that’s a hidden luxury as well.

Just putting it out there for others - this is a very bad idea. You are very lucky none turned into a root canal or hot tooth.
Happy for you that u got them taken care of 😃

I'm missing a tooth an have a hole there for a few years already. It cost a few thousands to put in an implant.
Is that a luxury or a necessity?
I did without for a few years!
Not so simple!

Therapy. Meds not covered by insurance. Psychiatrists. If I wouldn’t have to pay them, I would be very very rich by now.
Meanwhile I am in so much debt but I can’t give this up.
