I buy one plain shaitel every few years as needed. (I wear it 7 days a week.) Having a scrupulously honest SM makes all the difference to me. Ask around for someone you can trust and then feel confidence in her opinion.
You can know what the shaitel looks like when you try it on but the SM can predict what it will look like in 6 months. Ask her which features/ modifications are a worthwhile investment.
Your kind relative is taking care of the cost. You do your part by buying from someone trustworthy.

I get a 2k shaitel once every 5 years. That's about $400 per year. $40 per month. I wash and set myself. I think hair styling is about that much. So I think this is a very normal price for hair care. I love my shaitel and am so grateful that I get to choose new ones every few years at this price.

I just bought a very nice Miri for 2,500. If you buy a short shaitel you can get even cheaper

I’m not commenting on price , but a word about fit:
The cap should fit you well to begin with.
If you need to start fixing the cap, it may never sit right or look right on your head.
This has been my experience

I’m a SM.
I love all the super flat and thin wigs (Rina, Irene level)
But op- you probably want something a little bit thicker bec these wigs will thin and not last as long as a fuller one
A Sary might be a good idea. Maybe a Kiki X
These will be 2000-2500

I got a Sary pre-covid for Shabbos and it's lasted very well. But obviously I'm not wearing it daily.
At the time it was at a sale and it was longer than the officially labeled length. (for example, if I wanted a 12 inch shaitel, I got it from the 10 inch section so it was cheaper but the actual length was more similar to a 12 inch.) It was around $1000. I'm not at all surprised if that type of shaitel is now over 2k

A good decent quality one you're likely looking at $2500-$3000 these days
Don't get an irene if it needs to last! too many stories, including mine.
I know people very happy with Sary's line

I heard great things about Kiki X. They are lower in price, maybe even just under 2, definitely not more than lower 2’s.

What does processed vs. virgin hair mean? I mean, I can figure out what the words mean. But is there any real downside to processed hair? I'm not looking for top of the line. Are standard sheitels typically processed? In other words, is a processed sheitel considered a "cheap option" and virgin is normal? Or is virgin considered a luxury and processed is normal? I'm assuming, based on the price range that you gave me, that virgin is more for people who are willing to spend more than the average, and processed hair is "normal" and will still typically last. Can someone confirm that that's true?
Also, can someone tell me what I'm looking for after it's washed and dried? Would a "bad" sheitel suddenly look awful (tangles, straggly hair) after it's washed and dried? Also, do I ask her to do this before cutting it, and that's a normal request? |
Most people get processed bec virgin is more expensive. Virgin will last longer though supposedly.

I know people very happy with Sary's line | Im wearing my Irene daily for the last 4 years and it still looks great. The net stretched a bit but no oxidation. My Kiki X is 3 shades lighter after one year of shabbos wear.

I was in Irene today and tried on a few precuts. A 22 inch regular skin top is 1,600. They are on sale until Jan 2 for 1,100.
The lace tops were 100 more and also on sale. Regular price 1,700, sale 1,200.

In my experience processed hair has lasted longer than virgin hair (but I am blond). SM added baby hair free because it was included in cost of wig.

Your SM carries certain brands, try on and see. $2k is average.
It shouldn't need much work - it should look pretty good as is
You can only try your best and can't predict the future. Wear it in good health!

My Kiki x needed to be dyed because it oxidized so badly, after4 years.
I don't know if that's normal or not.
