I just fold it down several times. The roll gets pretty thick but so what? You could take it to a seamstress to cut it down and reattach, but it would be expensive, and there's no guarantee it would look right.

Do you sew and knit? It hardly seems worth the effort, but you could remove the collar and either
--unravel as many rows of the knit as you need, finish off the raw edge and reattach or
--sew a few rows of stitching halfway down (or whatever point is good), cut off the excess, and reattach.
The difference being only if you unravel the knit--best if it's a heavy yarn and big stitches--or cut it off if it's a thinner yarn with small stitches.

I wouldn't try it unless I were an expert or didn't care if I ruined the sweater. OTOH if you don't sew, you can take it to a professional and see what they would charge to do the job. It may or may not be worth the expense. Sometimes we "fall in" with something and can't use it after all. Then you give it away and consider it a kapparah. Better a sweater that doesn't suit than a husband who doesn't suit.

I gave mine into my seamstress. She said if I want it cut then she would have to make a seam and it would be expensive so she folded it down twice and then sewed it down.. cam out perfect!
