If you heard a man named Yehuda Leib name his son Ariel _____ (undecided on middle name) would you think that was odd?
We’ve gotten psak that they’re two separate names so we could do it if we wanted to, but we both wonder if it would be strange.

I know a shoshana that has a daughter raizy, and because they’re sefardi, her granddaughter is once again shoshana! The only one that seemed weird to me was someone whose name was roiz and her daughter was raizel.

No why would I? They're not the same name, unless people go around calling both of them Ari or Areleh. Now if dad were Eliezer and ds Eleazar or Eliezri, that would be a bit too similar for comfort.
OTOH I would think it was nauseatingly cutesy-poo.

I think this is actually very common since names in families often overlap.
What I mean is, let's say the mother wants to name after her grandfather who was yehuda Leib, but her DH is also yehuda Leib and he is still alive. So they name the baby Aryeh in memory of the grandfather.
We've actually done something like this (not those exact names, but same idea) and I've seen it happen a lot.

I know someone who had two sons, one named Nachman and one Nochum. They are named after 2 different people and their rav says it was ok.

I'm going imamother on this one because many people know my family names and these stories.
My grandfather was Meir Zalman ben Shlomo (Zalman can be Shlomo)
I have a cousin who is Daniel Shlomo be Dan Shalom (yes the father did it on purpose)--the father is even "Daniel" in English and goes by Danny. His son is still a child goes by "momo"--not sure what he will do as an adult.
My husband's family was not frum and when we got married he wasn't sure what his name was supposed to be on the kesuba because while he was familar since becoming frum that his name was Yaakov Shalom, he found his "Bris Certificate" which said "Shlomo Yaakov". He got the psak that since he used the name "Yaakov Shalom" that was the name that should go on our kesuba.
When we were naming our 2nd son, Shlomo being a name of several of my ancestors, we had to ask a shaila if we could use the name Shlomo since it MIGHT be my husband's name. We were told for several reasons it was fine.
When my son was a few years old we took him to meet my husband's great-aunt and she goes "Shlomo, that was my husband's name" (I.e. the man my husband was named for). So we go ok, so my son is in someways Shlomo ben Shlomo Yaakov (though he does not use that version of his name).
