I don't think that's true of my neighborhood. I'm pretty sure it's not.

Another wife of a rebbe earning 55 here.
Enjoying the love on this thread.

Yes, 55k in town is very standard. Not sure why you think 145k is standard, just because some random fellow at the Aguda convention decided it is. Dh actually works 3 additional jobs so we can get by.
But carry on with your ranting against Rebbeim.

I can't get past the fact that he said 18k for camp as a necessity for "many kids". Calculated 3 kids, full summer @ 6k each.

I just want to say to all teachers and wives of rebbeim on this thread: I know it’s a huge sacrifice. The rebbeim and teachers in my kids’ school do not get paid well at all. If I could afford I’d love to buy each of my kids’ rebbeim and teachers a house and car! I pay full tuition (BH can afford) and try to give tzedakah to the school bec I firmly believe our kids Rebbeim and teachers are heroes who deserve every penny and should be able to live a dignified life.

YSV.
Darchei didn't mention numbers but didn't argue with them either. So probably similar. I think most of the more well-known litvish yeshivas are similar

YSV
Has their books opened because they file as a school and not a congregation
YSV is making a nice profit a year….
So it makes sense hey pay their rebbe well
Go to the more yeshivish schools the rebbes are making a lot less

I hate the way it became so common to turn the parents into fundraisers with all these charity campaigns.
I might be wrong but I think in the past the fundraising was the job of the school's official fundraiser. They'd travel the world to fundraise for the school.
Maybe what we need is not higher tuition but more professional fundraisers at the top that know where the big money is.

Deleted misinformation

Rebbeim are getting $140k a year plus extras for making simchas!
My husband and I net close to that and don't get any extras for simchas.
There in lies the issue. The expectation that rebbeim need to earn more than the average person.
Teachers working 3 hours a day making $50k?
His numbers for living expenses make sense. His salaries and expectations are astronomical.

Huh. My husband is a rebbe and makes 70k. Not 140k

Did anyone pick up in the beginning when they spoke about all the donuts and sterns being delivered. He spoke about kids today “needing” all these things.

I’m not saying that alone will solve the crisis but I do think schools spend on extra things that are not necessary in the name of “kids today need donuts or they are going off the derech” - and that attitude is part of the ripple effect that has lead to financial issues accross our entire community.

I'm not writing untruths. I am quoting a school administrator that gave those numbers publicly. I even included a clip to the link.
Because you don't want to check it out doesn't make me a liar. Go have a listen for yourself!

You're getting second-hand flak for what you posted because this panel was a very unfair representation of the state of our schools. I listened to it and I just laughed out loud at the absurdity.

They chose two very well-established schools with dependable supporters and a parent body of which at least 50% pay full tuition to tell us about the side of the school administrator. I mean, really. I would bet my last dollar that there isn't a single school out of the 70+ mosdos in Lakewood in which 50% of the parent body pays full tuition. And where the average income is 300k. Who are we kidding here? So of course this school can afford to pay their rebbeim well and to have a no-tuition policy for all families that lost a parent, are on tomchei shabbos, or have a parent who lost a job.

I can't speak for other communities but I can tell you that the schools in Lakewood are dealing with a very different reality.

I send my kids to YSV and everything R Orzel said is 100% accurate. He is speaking about YSV specifically. They pay their rebbeim very well. There is a whole van of rebbeim that drive in every day from Lakewood because it is worth it.
The reality in Monsey if you send to YSV and have a whole bunch of kids (that are school age) and are making $300k (before taxes) you are barely making it. Monsey is expensive. The playgroups here are in the $850 to $900 range a month where I live. If I drove 20 minutes each way every day to the other side of Monsey then I can get playgroup for cheaper a month. Ysv tuition is 11 and a half thousand for each child. For mesivta in Monsey we pay $14k for one child without dorming. And if you are making $300k no one is giving you any break whatsoever. The camps here where most YSV students go are very expensive as well. Yes, I pay 18-20k for camps for my kids. Lakewood is completely different. I always discuss this with my sister-in-law in Lakewood who is in the same type of circles. She pays much less for everything. My husband may make more than hers but we are in no better shape. Her tuition costs her 7k and camps are way cheaper there.

70k is a great salary for someone who works 25-30 hours a week, and only about 9 months a year after summer and yomim tovim. Don't forget getting every erev YT off, every chag, issru chag...
Plus cash bonuses chanukah, Purim ...
Plus any tuition discounts.
Plus perks like the bulk order/ discounted food for chagim...
Presents, lunches etc but varies by school.
My kids school has given discounted tickets to chol hamoed activities.
Don't forget the schools collect for YT expenses Sukkos and Pesach. They heavily advertise around YT to pay for their "poor teachers".
Plus community programs for chinuch people but those vary.

I have a Masters, work about 40 hours, and years of experience and get none of those bonuses but only make about 70/75k now. I use my vacation for YT.

I have no problem with teachers getting paid. But it is not a full time job so full time salary isn't reasonable...

I’m sure he’s not making numbers up, but what was Agudah’s point in giving the floor to a school that is so clearly the outlier among our schools? Almost none of his numbers apply to the majority of schools in the tri state area and their parent bodies, so how can any of it be relevant?

That he thought a school should feel tuition comes after a full summer in sleepaway camp- and landscaping. That's not reasonable for most schools.

Realize you are generalizing about Rebbis. Maybe this is true for the school you send to, it's definitely not true across the communities

I don’t think he said 300 is average… I think the point was even someone making 300 can afford tuition…. And that’s very valid!! Ysv tuition is very high and as others have said Monsey is expensive in general
