We spent fourteen years in kollel. Yes We. Because it was an equal commitment. We did not live high on the hog in the slightest. Like the year tomato prices went bananas we stopped eating tomatoes, I bought nothing lived on nothing and had nothing. The minute I could no longer do it. Husband looked for a job. He works. I work. We still don’t have much . My children in law come to visit. They smile, at least usually and I have no en suite bathroom.
If you think about it it’s likely only one or two ppl who irritate you. Think of me

Why are people acting like “poor kollel families” who have no money. Boo-hoo, get a job if they’re too poor!

Honestly no. It's one thing if the husband is in kollel and the wife is working, and they still need programs. Fine I am totally okay with that. But to not work davka so you can get all these programs? So you can stay home with your kids but the rest of us can't? I take serious issue with that. Welfare is for poor people. Not for people who are deciding to be in poverty. And yes, I have issues with everyone who takes advantage of the system. Jews or non Jews. It's lazy and selfish.

I still can't get over the person who said her sister gets programs so she doesn't have to work much. So both technically unemployed living off welfare? Honestly disgusts me.

To be honest I grew up like this as well. As a Kollel family the extent of my being on government programs thru close to 30 years of marriage was a few months of WIC that I qualified for after the birth of my oldest - till I got a raise and never qualified again. I was raised with this mehalech - that government programs are there to help when you are trying your hardest and need a little more till you get there.
However, I don't consider myself (or my upbringing) to be the final authority on everything in life, and I have seen that there are others who feel differently, and think, the general American public that is getting those government programs aren't all living with this outlook, so why shouldn't frum Jews get some of those same benefits as well. At least they aren't using those dollars to game the system, and are using it to feed their families and raise their kids with parents taking care of them and raising them to be solid citizens.....

It should go to people who are actually poor. If her husband is in kollel, she should get a job. Unless someone is supporting them. Relying on programs when both of you are choosing not to work is terrible! My gosh at least the wife could do something!!

I hope the single mother in Newark living on welfare disgusts you just as much (it should actually disgust you more). If not, you may want to examine why you feel this way.

Both parents choosing not to work is gaming the system. Husband in kollel, fine. Wife can get a job. If it's still not enough, programs are fine. But to just take it because it's there and you don't want to work? No.

Is the single mom trying to get a job? If she's not, it definitely disgusts me. It's not my job to pay for people's irresponsible choices. If you're getting married and raising a family someone in that house needs a JOB.

I guess to me gaming the system is a different level beyond. I recently read J.D. Vance's book, and he describes gaming the system that he saw growing up - like people who bought food items they were entitled to on foodstamps, and then sold them for cash which they used to purchase drugs.

How did she become a single Mom? Comitted relationship that didn't work out, or....
Why jump to marriage and raising a family?

Feel free to stop working and go on programs. I didn't want to, so I chose not to.

Lol this is the US. There are always jobs available. If someone is not working, it's by choice.

I will just say this: I have 3 siblings who started out in Kollel. Wives were working full time. Once their husband's started working they cut back because if they made a lot they would lose cheaper insurance and wic. If non jews do it then why can't we? It's not like these women didn't sacrifice while their husbands were in Kollel. My sister worked 8 to 3 in public school and was exhausted when she came home. She wants to be able to take care of her family and do shopping. What is wrong with that?

Who's watching the kids?
Might be jobs available but it's cheaper to give her welfare then have her put her kids in foster care because she can't raise them do to the fact she can't make enough to cover childcare and rent, food, ect..
You can say so don't have them, but many people do have a plan and many times the plan does not work.
If the baby is unplanned is it better for her to get an abortion then go on welfare?

You don't know any wealthy folks gaming the system. Reporting everything as business expense... Taking covid loans and investing ect ect. So my sister should go to work and pay taxes to pay for wealthy to game the system. And for illegals to get all the benefits... The whole system is corrupt. I'm also in the category of paying a ton of taxes I'm happy to support kollel in this way. If my sister gets an intense job (because a low end job will not even cover her babysitting ) her dh will be doing all appointments and be home for sick kids....
She can't come on here to defend her lifestyle since she doesn't even text ... Forget about in house computer or internet.

100% its cheaper to get her welfare, that was my point.
And yes indeed, who asked her to have the kids? This is 2024, the information age. If she doesn't know about birth control, a simple google search will give you that info.
Seriously there is no judgment for a single mother who got pregnant, not in a marriage, no actual means of support, but there is judgment for kollel lifestyle? Seriously how low have we fallen???

I used to think that way, then came Bush's bailouts with big Co. when the economy melted down while he was in office. His bailouts cost more then TANF cost in a few decades.
I looked into this after words the big welfare queens are not the single mom on TANF for three years(most people are on TANF for about that long)but the big guys.
McDonnell gets a boatload of tax money because they give job training.
The farm money does not go to small farms but plantations.
I can go on, but I have changed my tune now let the little guy get some of my money I am not going to get lower taxes while the big guys keep milking the system.
