I'm planning my Aliyah and with a large family id love to be a bit prepared .. from what I hear all homes and apartments are smaller with no closets or storage. I'm just wondering then where do you put the things that need closets/storage? Coat closets, luggage closet, pesach closet, linen closet, pantry, food closet, toy closet, out of season clothing, Costco closet, paper goods, cleaning supplies? The list goes on and on!! obviously I will need to purge a lot..but I figured if I'm taking a lift maybe it would make sense to bring certain storage peices from the US? So my question is -as someone on the other side of the fence if you could go back and bring certain pieces of furniture for storage what would they be?? Is a bunch of IKEA closets ideal? (Better to do IKEA here or in Israel??) And if not..where DO you put all these items?? Thanks for any advice please no judgement...

Do you know anything about the layout of the apartment you’re moving to? Some come with a storage room, for starters. Some have outdoor space where you can put a shed. Under the beds and over closets are heavily utilized here. We don’t buy in bulk for kitchen items, no room. That includes toilet paper and disposables. So we need to shop often.

1. Instead of a coat closet a lot of people put hooks on the wall near the front door. Depending on location, you don't really use coats all that often. On the off season I store coats in each person's bedroom or you could store in the machsan. I only let them out when it gets cold which hasn't happened yet for us. Now we have sweatshirts hanging.
2. Luggage, pesach, out of season clothing - machsan
3. cleaning supplies - under the kitchen sink
4. toys - Ikea closet in the playroom/living room or closet in kids bedroom
5. paper goods - some people put an extra Keter or Ikea closet in their kitchen or dining room

I prefer to buy most things here in Israel. Once you have an apartment and have the exact measurements you can buy closets that will fit your space. You can also install shelves wherever available. Are you planning to buy or rent?

My small 2 bedroom apartment has something called a 'boidem' it's a storage area in the ceiling over the hallway with a door to it from each side on top of the bedroom doors.
I store in it majority of my pesach items, my large suitcases with vacuum bags of kids clothes in, the heaters during winter &the baby bouncer chair in it original box. Probably more I've forgotten about.
These storage areas are very common.
Our hall way has a little indent that the landlord put a coat closet there. So all coats and jackets we are using are in there together with the older kids school bag, the small suitcase we use if going away for Shabbos and I keep the outing bags in there.
We have the kosher beds that lift up with storage under, I keep my seasonal clothes, duvets/blankets depending on weather, stock pile of tissues and stockpile of toiletries.
I also have a machsan. It's meant to be shared with the neighbour but our landlord had a fight many yrs ago and the neighbours stay far away from it (I'm not complaining) we keep a standing freezer, sukkah boards, ladder, winter coats in large storage containers, toilet training stools, sit n rides, the newborn crib and now toddler crib, I bulk buy flour so that is kept there plus plenty of the landlord stuff. You get the idea.
Newer apartments should all come with a machsan, some private some shared.
It really depends on the size of your home and the storage options it comes with.
There are plenty of places to buy different size cabinets from.
We just bought from ACE a 2 door cabinet for toys the exact size we needed for 500nis during black Friday and we didn't have to bother with schlepping to IKEA...
We have added huge heavyweight shelves matching the wood of the kids closet in the kids room with storage boxes for the craft items, it holds the printer, office supplies etc.
There are plenty of options, you just have to think out the box and sometimes be creative with the areas you have.

Congratulations on your planned aliya!
If you have storage closets it depends on how big they are. Israeli items tend to be smaller to fit in.
If you already do a lift and happen to have the space in the lift I would try to bring it. In worst of cases you'll put it up on sale/give away.
I recommend once you are here you may find storage items for free at agora.co.il and many other things (create a smart agent in the system and you'll get automatic mails)
