I pay my accountant for my tax returns, business and personal. Every so often, usually 2-3 times a year, I have a question about what I need to file for the business or something about planning. They are not long conversations, probably 5 minutes if I actually get someone on the phone. Sometimes just a quick email.

Is that considered part of the job? Is it expected to be able to ask these kinds of questions without paying extra?

Sometimes when I ask about a new filing, like BOI, they offer to do it for me. I decline because it's just my freelance business, no employees, and I don't want to pay for something easy to do myself.

I pay full and on time for the services I use, but I get the impression they find my questions annoying.

If you owe them more for these questions they’ll let you know.

My accountant once sent me a bill for a random question I asked him almost a half a year later. I guess they will charge you if they want to!

Accountant here.

2-3 questions throughout the year is not considered bugging. There are clients who do a lot more than that.

Especially if you pay for everything on time without complaining, carry on.

My husband is an accountant. Answering questions is part of the services provided for each client.

Thanks for all the responses! This is what I would have thought, but lately it seems like they're avoiding me, not calling back. Maybe it's time to find a new accountant.
