I would think it needs to be replaced with equal value otherwise you can run into ribis problems, may be worth asking a Rov about |
Agree. And you couldn't possibly buy a new laptop for the value of a used, old generation laptop (I.e. nil).

Op I don't think getting an old computer replacement or a junky new computer with the same monetary value is helping
Would you consider some of if the other suggestions on this thread?

Wow thanks. Doesn't need to be exactly equivalent. But have no altd in what space range what kind what to look for.... That person wouldn't care with what I'm replacing and would dismiss it altogether if I ask or offer money. But I do want to get something else instead and finish this business....

OP if the pc is this old it's a miracle it was working until now especially as it's a HP. (Only in the more recent years they have upped their game and are really good)
DH is a computer technician and a normal pcs life is upto 6 yrs and if it's really good and taken care of can work for a bit longer.
The value of the old computer is nowhere near the value of the equivalent of buying the same new now 10 yrs later.

I just asked DH if it would have been valued recently what the price would be, he said the absolute most would be $300 but he would be shocked if it would have even gotten that.
OP you should prob discuss it with the family member or a Rav what you should pay back. Buying a $1-2000 laptop is definitely not the value but what it was valued at when bought new if buying the same now.

Can I get basic lap top for this price? Or they all are much more expensive?

OP, the best way to "finish this business" if you're doing it for them, is probably to send a gift card to an electronic store of its value. That way they can put it toward something they actually like.

Whatever you can get for $300 isn't worth it
Which is what was said several times earlier in the thread

A good home laptop on Amazon is approx $4-700 now. Of course if you spend time researching you prob can get a better price. I just did a quick search for an HP intel i5, 8gb RAM. (A basic home laptop which is i3 you can prob get cheaper)
An office will more likely go for an i7 and higher Ram. But it depends what they need it for.
It they need graphics they will get one with an expensive graphics card and definitely a 16/32 GB Ram. If they have heavy programs they will need the extra Ram but not the graphics card etc...
If they just have it for basic office needs like word, excel, one or 2 light programs and internet the i5 8 or 16 GB is fine.
I'm not even going to start on the SSD memory as that is very easy and cheap to upgrade especially in a new computer.
That's the problem when buying a laptop without knowing what it is needed for, you can end up buying one that doesn't work well with the needs or pay a fortune for no reason and could have gotten a cheaper option....
