I have a duvet cover I want to give to a seamstress to make smaller.

Do you have to leave room at the seam for the duvet to fit in?

I dont know how to explain my question - does it need some depth, or its just sewn at the sides to a certain measurement?

I’m doing the exact thing. Taking in a duvet cover, to make it small for my toddlers.
The duvet measures 36 inches, and I’m giving it 4 inches for the fluffiness, so duvet cover will be 40 inches.

oh I see. is that how you do it? just leave a bit more room in the width?
not that you have to somehow (I dont know how) leave some depth so the duvet should fit....

Theoretically a gusset would work, like a strip of fabric all around, but I've never seen a duvet cover like that. That's more for cushions or other things that are stuffed firmly, while a duvet is fluffier.

I noticed on the cushion cover that I cant flatten it out till the seams and iron it.

there is spare material at the sides. its not bigger than the cushion so there is more room, its sewn in a diff way....
