Maybe it wasn't Abba as a baby... Rivi did say that Abba never liked her looking at those pictures.

Adn not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but if Abba is not Avigdor Cohen, then who says he's a Kohein?!
Which means penina and gabe can get married Smile

Yes, it was mentioned, and that must be the only thing that we can all agree on. Gabe will turn out not to be a cohen and he and Penina will give it another go. There's too much foreshadowing in this direction for this not to be the case.

Along the lines of the kehuna thing. ..

Again, I think it's obvious that it's going to turn out that Gabe is not a kohen so he will be able to date Penina again . I'll be really surprised if that's not the ending here.

I know its fiction, but the very idea of doing a story about a kohen who turns out not to be a kohen- while being a very cool plot twist- actually makes me very uncomfortable.

I have heard of two stories recently (one about a very large prominent family) where the kehuna was questioned, meaning it was paskened that the whole family are not true (or kosher) kohanim.

This is a very tragic and uncomfortable situation. It means that every time they duchaned, those brachos were brachos levatala. It means that any time they were kohen for a pidyon haben, the pidyon was not kosher.

It's just not a subject to joke around about. And it's pretty scandalous that Abba, (ostensibly a frum jew) would take on the kehuna. I mean, if he was ok with impersonating a dead men, I guess we wouldn't put anything past him. But still. It's so confusing.

I just read it on the website .

No major movement except that it's being further confirmed that Rivi and Gabes father "Abba" had stolen the identity of Avigdor Cohen.

Gabe goes to the office where Hillel and Penina work, and Penina uses her skills to track down info on the real Avigdor Cohen. She brings along her son Daniel, and we see Gabe interacting with him. (Ostensibly to further along the plot of the two of them getting back together eventually. )

No questions have been answered in this installment.

So presumably "Abba" is really Moish Garfinkel, and M from the letter?

Yes, not sure why Gabe didn't figure that right away?

Moish garfinkel didn’t look like him at all-had light curly hair so don’t think so.

I didnt come to that conclusion. What makes you think that?
It just said next to avigdors picture it said "has anyone seen moish?" And vice versa. Where was there a clue that moish was the father?

There's a picture in the hallway of two friends who look very similar, one of which "Abba." Then they look at Avigdor Cohen's picture in the yearbook, and it looks similar to "Abba" but isn't quite right. Presumably, "Abba" is the friend who looks similar to Avigdor, which is how he assumed his identity.
Avigdor's best friend was Moshe Garfinkel, but his picture conveniently isn't in the yearbook. Moshe Reichman is the one with the light hair.

Based on the first few chapters I thought the story would be about Rivi and Gabe coming to terms with some darker topics that I like to see the magazines willing to touch on, like abuse, neglect and mental illness. Now that their father died, they would be experiencing some complicated grief and healing, while learning secrets of their father's past. Maybe some of these secrets would help them find closure or comfort, or perspective.

But it seems the story turned away from that and became a mystery. Oh well.

Yes I came to the same conclusion.
I think the two were best friends and for some reason, Moish took the identity of Avigdor after he died.
That's my guess anyway.
I think it's obvious that Moish has to be an important figure.

Probably. And the reason he took his identity has something to do with his paranoia. And the aborted Israel trip and the letter on the hotel stationery.

I'm assuming he had some guilt surrounding the circumstances of Avigdor's death, and he didn't want Avigdor's mother to find out he had died. So he buried him on his own and assumed his identity. And then regularly took his kids to visit Avigdor's mother, who had dementia and didn't realize they weren't her own grandchildren.

Did the real Avigdor have kids? A wife? What happened to Riva and Gabe's mother? There are still so many details that don't add up in this story.

OK but now with the recent chapter I'm sensing a foreshadowing with MARTIN, penina and hillel's boss! he seems to be suspicious, any thoughts?

I didn't pick up on that but would be so disappointed if it was true, he seems like such a nice guy.

Very suspicious, almost sinister, he just might be Moshe...does it say his last name somewhere?

The fallout from their dysfunctional childhood is evident in nearly every installment.
