Afaik, Mishpacha could never answer which Rav psak they followed, although they were asked many times. |
It's been mentioned here already multiple times that it's about advertisers not values.

There are many magazines that print pics of woman, but anyone who wants frum magazines has to accept their values. |
The thing is, the magazines themselves aren't supportive of those values for the most part. They just do it for financial reasons. This is their reasoning:
- if they print pics they lost a portion of their market share
- if they don't print pics, those who are unhappy don't have alternatives, so they'll reluctantly buy it anyways.
So here we are. If we were to collectively stop buying their magazines bec of the picture issue, it would trigger a change, but we will never organize ourselves around this.

It's not values, it's $$$$

I see no reason not to cater to the stricter parts of the community. It is already such a tiny business market. These papers need to earn a parnassah.
The only time I get annoyed is with if they gloss over like a prime minister or president or someone. But to me its a business decision that makes sense and a sensitivity that isn't harmful to cater to.

Any business can make their own rules, it's their right. No-one's forced to buy it.
Many people don't want woman's pics, and many don't care either way.
I would be very upset if there was a campaign to pressure them to print pictures. I want to bring a magazine into my house which reflect my values. I have a husband and son's, and having pictures of woman is not something I would bring into my house.
Anyone who wants pictures can still buy the magazine, it doesn't change the content. But many people, myself included would stop buying it.

I don't love that they exclude women but as others said, that alone wouldn't stop me from buying a magazine if that magazine is my only option. But I agree that when they blur out or exclude little girls but have no problem publishing little boys, that bothers me a lot and I hate the message it's sending our boys and girls.

Why does it annoy you if they gloss over a female president or PM if you're all for catering to the strictest norms?
Are women during the Holocaust less worthy being featured than presidents?
Oh, and hello, stickers on cereal boxes in supermarkets. That's what happens when you cater to the "stricter part of the community"

The more right-wing Yeshivish aren't reading it online for the most part.
And that's why this poll is meaningless - most people who don't want pics in magazines won't be on imamother. (And they're likely a bigger target market since these magazines are THE reading material and news source for them.)

But it is harmful. It sends the wrong message. It feeds the perspective that women are objects and more. (See other thread for better explanations.)
Extremism and being strict is not without consequences. It also sets a slippery slope where stricter group create demands and expect society to cave to them.
Why can't the stricter group work with the rest of society. They can cross out the photos or paste stickers on top. Why do we cave to them to our detriment when they have options. The current method serves one group while denying any options at all for the rest.

I'll ask again, why not print women's and girls' pics in the women's and kids' mags?

Don't agree with that. Many of the demographic group that don't support pics aren't buying these magazines, so it balances out the equation here online.

Why is it sending the wrong message?? Ever heard of 'hinei soroh b'ohel'? Woman are meant to be in the background, it's what Hashem intended.
Sorry I don't get the 'wrong message' business. Woman are not meant to be 'out there'.

Whats stopping you from taking 5 min to peruse the magazine and use a black marker to cross out any pics you dont like?

So then let's have background pics of women 😀. Right now they're non-existent.
On a serious note. I don't think Miriam and Devorah were in the background.

I would find that very offensive and I think that would send very wrong messages to my children. It's much better this way without pictures. Women from all sorts of lives, varying opinions on halacha, can be featured.
