How do you feel about mags not having pics of women (or very few)?

I saw there were lots of likes and lots of hugs on the mishpacha thread, so it seems like a hot topic

Many threads on here on this topic. I don't see the issue, it's a big world out there, can't please everyone so if you don't like it, don't buy it. Or grin and bear it.
But on here, it seems that people take offense. Why it ruins the reading experience idk, but whayever I guess.

I think regarding the poll - their target audience matters a lot. Like if 1/2 the ppl voting that they care but wouldn’t buy the magazine regardless then who cares.

I voted that I don't like it, but I think that calling it erasing women is exaggeration and hysteria.

I don't agree with people who think that having tasteful pictures of women will lead to all sorts of terrible things, but at the same time, I equally don't agree with people who think that not having pictures of women will lead to all sorts of terrible things.

I personally don’t care at all. However, DH is careful with shmiras einayim and said he understands why people have a problem with women in the magazines. He says these men work so hard to be very careful with what they see, so why ruin in with an otherwise kosher magazine…

I don’t understand how men work, so I see no issue with it. But I trust him that he’s not just trying to make a problem where there is none.

I don't like it that way, but I respect the reasons behind it enough+ it doesn't bother me enough to really influence my choices of reading material. Chabad if it matters.

I don’t know why Binah can’t have pics of women. It really bothers me when couples are honored and they don’t show pictures of the wives (not specifically related to magazines).

I don’t care about women photos. I’m an adult I can handle the lack of photos, even if I think it’s incorrect.

But I’m particularly bothered by circulars that don’t feature little girl photos for their clics projects, etc. I hate the message it sends our little girls.

Why can't they put women's pics in the women's and kids' magazines only?

Reason being that there aren’t any other options really. If you want to read a frum magazine, you’re stuck with whatever they print.

Ok, that's your preference. But others prefer differently. So as long as you get the option to choose whether you do or don't want your picture included, are you ok with it?

Exactly. Wouldn't it make sense to print pics and then those who don't want them can remove or cover them? This way everyone gets their choice.

Contrary to your entire premise, I believe this makes magazines much more inclusive.

There are so many women featured, from so many walks of life, with so many different halachik shittas.

Why should the magazine have to be put on the line and face fire from both sides week after week for excluding someone that they would otherwise feature because of the picture?

I'll give an examples.

Let's say it is a very inspirational woman, from eretz Yisrael, the mother of a victim or survivor herself , of a terrorist attack. And she's dati le'umi. This hypothetical lady has been giving beautiful words of inspiration and faith moving us all to tears. Her halachik psak on tznius does not conform to chareidi/American BY standards while the magazines audience is primarily the BY type of crowd. Neckline, hairline, whatever. Why should they have to exclude her or be put in a terrible position of having to make a statement by including her without a picture? Just because I don't agree with her tznius does not mean I look down on her or I do not want to hear her amazing words.

The same can be said about an Amazing chef, an interior decorator, a fiction author...you name it! Any of these women who want to be seen are featured online, for sure on their own websites and Instagram and very likely on the magazines cite too.

But people are more sensitive to what they bring into their house and leave lying around for their children to see.

And even though people like to make fun of it, if their husband doesn't want to see it, it's not because he's a crazrd person who will get turned on, it is because he is complying to a certain set of values. You don't have to agree with it, but there is no reason why you can't respect it. Certain people who are part of the target audience will not have it in their house.

I personally happen to Read non-jewish fiction. My children do not and for that reason I only read on my phone where and when they cannot see. I like the magazines because they represent so many different worldviews, so many different women and so many different professions with very very varying life experiences. The lead is featured are not all from 1 community!

Why limit it by forcing border, the magazine to become policemen over which hairline and neckline is acceptable?

The women are not erased or eliminated. They are featured loudly and proudly expressing all kinds of diverse views.

Voice to text. Excuse typos.

Women who want pictures of women in the magazines want it for the exact same reason there are pictures of men in the magazines. The magazines are not so quick to get rid of those.

Then don't print any pics of men either. It sends a very wrong message.

They know their readership. I imagine they know they'd lose readers if they printed pics of woman.

There are many magazines that print pics of woman, but anyone who wants frum magazines has to accept their values.

Their values, you say? How come Mishpacha online has women's pictures?
Afaik, Mishpacha could never answer which Rav psak they followed, although they were asked many times.

The people who read it online aren't the same people who read the print mag obviously.
