Just saw "not Lakewood" specification.
Given the concentration of young people here, you may want to consider Lakewood as long as your son is basically yeshivish enough.
Some of these yeshivas have out of towners in 12th grade and beis medresh.
Some are more "greasy" than others.

R Sholom Zimmerman is a good place for smart boys. I'm just not sure that they take enough of those "smartest, brightest, metzuyanim" to provide chavrusas and enough stimulation for OP's son.

Great point.
Forgot that switching is usually for second year.
Op, even if your son doesnt want Lkwd, maybe have him fraher at one or two of the most advanced mesivtas and then ask them for recommendations.
Or maybe your son will like what he sees.
Im still surprised that your mesivta cant advise you or at least help you research.

Also there's more than just level of learning or yeshivishness. My son is very strong socially, and he wants a personable rosh yeshiva, which are factors in his decision making. Your son's yeshiva should really be involved, and your other sons likely have the most accurate info about what each yeshiva is all about. In my experience a Mesivta/bm move usually happens with minimal input from the parents...

Many of the weinberger boys become doctors ?? News to me . But yes , top yeshiva and not too yeshivish , and they do sometimes take new boys for bm

Another option in lakewood out if the box if you don’t want yeshivish is rabbi Weinberger’s. The boys are top good boys but no smoking or drinking, very straight boys who are serious smart learners but many of them eventually will become doctors. It’s more for a boy from an American home but a top yeshiva |
Neither of these are accurate. Rav Shlomo Feivel has many many metzuyanim and the RY gives a very unique complex high level shiur which is not for everyone. Never heard of anyone going from Weinberger to any level of college. It does however present as a more “balabatish” place maybe that’s your interpretation. By American I assume you mean less yeshivish more balabatish.

I wrote it fast. Many become more the professional type and the parent body is more that type of mindset and not as yeshivish. It’s an option if her son finds lakewood too yeshivish for her this might be a good option it’s not the typical lakewood mesivta.
Weinberger mesivta also has full English which rav Aahron was against when he started bmg and that’s why most mesivta in lakewood don’t offer English.
Weinberger’s opened for a different type of boy.

I just think it's really hard for Imamothers to get the nuances between all the BM and it might be easier to find the specific yeshiva that op's son is looking for by talking to rebbeim in shul/yeshiva.
Someone like Rabbi straus in Lakewood for example.

My son went to Rav Shustals yeshiva. For reference, he farhered at Keren Hatorah (for high school) and we were told that he was in the top five (I know I'm an anonymous imamother, and never tell anyone about this IRL, but I can't help myself  ).
But this is the thing. Every single yeshiva is going to have boys with a range of abilities. I know boys who are brilliant, boys who are super brilliant, boys who are smart, boys who are average... and they can all be in the same yeshiva.
For a certain type of boy, he might be better off staying where he is and learning with a yungerman, that's what my son did.
And another thing. The only really high level high school yeshiva I can think of out of Lakewood is Phili, or maybe Tiferes Elimelech, and it might be too late to get in this year. I don't think think you should cross Lakewood off your list simply because so many great boys and great yeshivos are here, and he's more likely to find a fit with so many choices to choose from.

You are correct Phili is high level mesivta, but it’s not the highest BM, AND it’s very hard for the boys who go there just for BM trying to break into a shiur that’s already been together for 4 years. Much better going somewhere that is just BM and everyone is new.

My sons in Weinbergers now and we and he are more yeshivish. It was actually a big discussion with his rebbi when we were applying because we heard it’s more balebatish. But his rebbi said we should look more into it, because he felt the level was perfect for my son and he said it’s just the name it has. We did look more into it, and I see who’s in his shiur now. Yes, they do have from more balebatish families, but there are plenty from more yeshivish too

Same experience. My son’s shiur in BM is quite yeshivish. Are there boys with thick brisker payos- NO. But there are plenty yeshivish.
