I came across a matzeiva of a man who was born in Ukraine in early 1900s, and lived and was buried in the US, in 1970s.
Name on matzeiva is שלום סוניה— what could the second name be? Not Sonya, as it is exclusively a woman’s name…

We also had a shonyi in our family (no idea the spelling but that’s how we pronounced it.)
I think that was his Hungarian name and I don’t recall his Jewish name.

A man? How did you even pronounce it, and what was the “real” formal name?

I just looked it up, apparently the name is spelled Sanyi and is a Hungarian version of Alexander. No idea if that’s related to the name you’re asking about.
