If mom took Tdap isn’t baby protected? My obgyn told me it protects my newborn when I got my tdap

Baby has some percentage of protection, but it's not complete.

For the poster who raised the question about babies being around grandparents whose immunity has worn off, you’ve raised a great point (albeit facetiously.) Yes, it’s very important for grandparents to update their Tdap so as not to give pertussis (whooping cough) to an infant or young baby. We had ours before our dd gave birth. For those who think it’s not an issue, it’s going around in the NYC area. Also, our ds came home from Israel with it a few years ago. I was skeptical, until I heard that his friends were all being diagnosed, some several states away. So it’s a thing. OP, yes, I would exercise caution when hosting an unvaccinated guest. Limit play to outdoors or wait until the baby is older.

Does breastfeeding help immunity?

I do need to think about this, I will definitely have young kids wanting to hold my baby once I am ready to sit outdoors after baby comes (I live on a block where the kids love pushing and holding babies)

I understood that until 6 months baby is protected by my immunity and breast milk.

I would let my vaccinated kids play with them outside or on someone else's turf but would not let them into my house with the 3 month old. The odds of them actually spreading something are low but with a little baby I'm not playing even low odds. They can come over after the baby is a year old and has had one of everything and is a little less fragile.

The grandparents argument is ridiculous. I myself predate the varicella vax. I had a lovely chicken pox in kindergarten along with my ENTIRE peer group and I believe we are more immune than my kids will ever be.

I would keep the baby away regardless.
Making safety about vaccinated/unvaccinated neighborhood kids is a little ocd imo. Tests and diagnoses aren't foolproof, everyone is carrying some virus for a week or two before they know they're sick, and pertussis is always going around lately.

At one point I had a baby with zero white blood cells.

I asked the group of doctors at the hospital what they thought about my kids playing with their unvaccinated neighbors.

Drs discussed and decided that since my kids are vaccinated it is okay. I should keep my baby away but my kids could play with them and I didn't have to worry about them bringing diseases home with them.

Speaking as a mom with unvaccinated kids, do what you feel is best. In general though, I wouldn’t have many people around my baby because as someone else pointed out, there are diseases out there where there is no vaccine for, or even diseases with vaccines that don’t do as great at protecting.

I did have a close friend who had a baby I never met because I knew her stance on vaccines. To where she required them for even her mom to be around the child. And that’s okay.

I heard there are current cases of whooping cough and measles. I wouldn't take a chance but that's just me... you can definitely talk to the pediatrician about it to ask about the risk and if current vaccines your child has is enough.

I would not let my kid play with an unvaccinated kid if I had a baby in the home. The baby doesnt have a great immune system
Even though I nurse and don't do formula.

If there was an outbreak of anything (measles etc) I wouldn't let my vaccinated kid play with any child unvaccinated. Vaccines are not 100% so playing with someone who hasn't had any is dangerous during an outbreak.
If I have a baby or immunocompromised family member I wouldn't allow it ever.

And yes, we had a huge measles outbreak where I live when I had a baby. We were invited out for a shabbos lunch and while there we found out NONE were vaccinated against measles. We left pretty quickly. (And yeah, their kids all had autism and other special needs and none were vaccinated with anything. Mom wasn't vaccinated either).

It's a different kind of immunity than the placental immunity very young babies have, it works differently.

Side point, almost all tiny infants with pertussis were born to moms who didn't get the DTaP while pregnant.

I think its due diligence to keep an infant away from all kids who are either 1- mildly sick even & 2- during the time period that contagious diseases are going around. Quite frankly, I think I kept someone that young in general away from all kids who aren't family. And I am totally not differentiating between vaxxed & unvaxxed.
