If hes handy, ask him to install window/s to make it brighter - Cut the wood panel & install plexiglass.
As for decoration - buy some cheap fabric and hang it all around the inside, staplegun it to the top of the walls - with pleats if you have enough fabric. Decorations can then be pinned either to the walls over the fabric, or to the material itself.

We're Lubavitch our minhag is not to decorate the sukkah at all.
