I really need a sounding board to help me figure out how to help DS, who's in lower elementary. He's been in OT, PT and speech on and off since he was a baby. Just took him back to the neurologist for the first time in 5 years and now officially have a diagnosis of DCD (developmental coordination disorder), which I've known since he was 3. The neurologist did a lot of physical and blood tests to rule out other diagnoses. DCD makes sense and captures a lot of his difficulties but doesn't give a full picture.
The thing is that he also lacks social skills, and says lots of silly things. His social/emotional is definitely a couple of years behind. He also has trouble following multistep instructions in class (not as much at home).
What am I missing?

Work on social skills and processing skills. What type of info are you looking for? What is the neurologist recommendation to treat him?

I'll be that person.

Omega-3s. Yes, they're gross. Give him a high quality fish oil omega-3 everyday. Not the gummies, the real thing.

The neurologist just focused on the physical issues. What exactly do you mean by processing?Do you have resources to help with the social skills and processing? I don't want to add more therapy goals when he's already missing so much school and bH if given the right resources I can definitely work with him myself.

This. And if you're in New York, make an appointment to see Mr. Metzbach. Sounds like a classical case where she can help.

I'd love to. Do you have any strategies for how to accomplish this? He's highly sensitive to lots of smells and tastes...

You can add in more therapy at home. There are trained therapists who work on teaching those skills.

I'm not in NY. Who is she? What does she help with?

The gut is the seat of the nervous system.

Heal the gut, heal the nervous system.

Shes in monsey. She does brain coordination type of exercises. I honestly have no clue how it works such wonders. But after watching my nephew with acquired brain injury and epilepsy grow and develop by leaps and bounds, I decided to try it for my son with kria/possible dyslexia and adhd issues. it has helped my son tremendously! Not just learning but also overall his ability to go about his days with a flow and not get stuck on things has improved so much. I'm contemplating taking my other kids too.

It's $300 for an initial consultation. Then there are independent people who she trained who do the actual exersized. A recheck is $150.
The expensive part is the actual exersizes. I pay $65 2-3x a week for half hour sessions. There is a rebbe in my sons school that's trained and he works with him during lunch hour.

I know she has trained others too. Her program is called "brainstorm".
It wouldn't hurt to try and see if there is something closer to you.

There is also roizy markowitz that has a similar program in monroe called "rise above" that I've done with my kid who has audhd/taurettes. She charges I think $320 for an eval and then 160 per week for a 1 hour session of reflex integration type brain exersizes, craniosacral and rhythmic movement. (Thats whay my kid needed. She does other stuff too) also was amazing for my kid. Was worth every single penny.

Good luck.

(I know it's expensive. It's literally our vacation money and our miscellaneous and petty cash and every last penny that we pay for it. But it's so so so so worth it!)

My first thought when I read op. Plus Neuroprotek but it's not kosher so maybe someone knows something similar.

Plus brain/body work.

Worth every penny.

Then add in ironic zinc, That will hopefully help with the smell and taste sensitivity. And that doesn't taste bad.

Bribe him. Or get the pills and teach him to swallow pills. If he's over 6 he can learn. Bribe him to learn.

Everything you're describing is a challenge with the neurons communicating with each other. Whether it's cognitive processing or physical coordination. Neurons need omega-3s for that. I'm guessing he is practically done in his diet. (Unless he's one of those rare kids who lives on salmon.)
