My one year old gets a cold so often (at least once a month and it lasts for around a week to a week and a half).
I already asked the doctor about it and he basically said that if he goes to a babysitter then it’s normal..
I need all the advise out there about what I can do to prevent it and how to relieve the congestion when he does have it.
He gets really congested in his throat and is basically up all night coughing

I wish I knew!
Humidifier in the bedroom can help for the nights. Important to keep it clean though which is annoying.

Alternative preventative remedies. Wash hands with soap and water frequently.
My mother always said being outside makes kids less prone to catch colds.

Use saline nasal spray to clear it up faster.
Vitamin c and d to boost immune system in a multivitamin.
My DD who is 2 has had almost no colds in playgroup in the last year. Some kids just have a better immune system than others but I do think giving her a multivitamin helped.

I work in a gan. The kids are one years old. You can do so many things but when they are playing with other kids that are also slobering all over the toys they all touch ir putting toys in their mouths, its inevitable that they will get sick.

Kids WILL get sick and is unavoidable. However, the frequency and duration can change with prevention. Both, proactive and reactive measures are needed.
Proactive on a daily basis:
Keep warm
Lots of outdoor air
Wash hands and face immediately when entering from outdoor and after handling public stuff
High quality Vitamin C
High quality Vitamin D
High quality Multi vitamin
Wholesome diet
Use fresh garlic in cooking
(The years I gave my kids vitamins they went through the entire year without a single day feeling ill. Then I stopped thinking it's baloney and the cycle started repeating itself).
Reactive as needed:
Wash hands and face more frequently.
Don't share food
Increase vitamin C
Garlic supplement
Mor rest
LOTS of clear fluid
Vaporub

Keep in mind that kids have more resilient immune systems when they are little. They can handle a cold much better. As long as it's not the flu or rsv they will be OK. Fresh air and hydration helps. A good night sleep helps. But it really is ok. My youngest spent the entire 2 year old program with a runny nose. It also a good opportunity to teach the child how to wipe and blow their nose. Well we are in kindergarten (4 year olds) and she hasn't gotten a cold yet. My older children didn't get it from her.

If you are still breastfeeding, keep at it. You pass on antibodies to baby that way.
Keep baby off dairy, it increases mucus.
The gut is the seat of the immune system, so I would focus on gut health for immune health. Probiotics, fermented foods, clean whole food diet, no gluten, refined oils or refined sweetners. A humic fulvic can go a long way. Trace minerals and magnesium drops in their sippy cup.

Garlic is one of the best things there is. Proven that you cant grow any bacteria in garlic and in think onion too.
An entire year without being sick? That's beyond fantastic !
