Someone told me that freezers can survive outdoors in backyards garages or porches, without a problem. They said fridges will break immediately. I know people who keep freezers on porches for years, why not fridges?
True or false?

Temperature in a garage is very different than temperature on a porch.

Is it just outdoors or the cold weather?
I live in LA and I've had a fridge outside for years (8+). Works well B"H.

What you heard is partly true. Some fridges aren’t designed to operate in extreme temperatures so if your garage gets very hot or very cold it could indeed make the fridge malfunction. What’s your climate and is the garage connected to the house/does the temp stay stable (50-80 degreees)?
If not you need to look for garage ready fridges

No problem to have one in there at all. You can ask the store which fridge/freezer has best weather control. Some made bette than others

Repair person from Town Appliances (Lakewood) says fridges die very quickly in garages.
WEIRD!
He's off the wall! This is the fridge I bought from Town Appliances, that repair person says will break in the garage.

I keep a freezer in garage.
Every year on the hottest day of the summer if takes a little nap.
I empty it, turn it off, clean it, let it sit for a few days or weeks. Then I plug it back in and it works fine until the next bad heatwave the next summer.
I'm in NY. It goes up to the 90s here usually....
It's an old freezer though. Bought is second hand a few years ago.

please edit.
No need for such an extreme reaction about a nice frum person working in an appliance store.
He might be misinformed but he's not 'weird' or 'off the wall'

There are some that cannot handle the temp changes. But they have specific ones for garage. So while it may seem weird, he could be speaking about those.

Many standard fridges can't cope outside an indoor limited temperature range. Some garage or outdoor ready fridges can.
Buy the correct appliance for your situation.

I was also told leaving fridges and freezers in a garage can break them. So far I've done it for 3 years and they are doing just fine bh.
That being said yes, there are specific garage ready appliances that are better suited to extreme temperature / changes.
